Join us at the Centre for Contemporary Histories (CCH): PhD scholarship opportunities A team of 50 researchers in Deakin’s Centre for Contemporary Histories (CCH) aims to conduct high-quality research that bolsters the quality of public discourse by bringing an understanding of the past to the world we all share. If you are passionate about conducting meaningful research that brings historical insights to contemporary concerns, consider exploring PhD opportunities with us. Our expertise ranges widely—from Australia’s Indigenous past and material culture transmission to religious changes in Australia to political histories across Europe, North America and the Pacific, and much, much more. -- The team’s research is organised loosely into three key pillars, but we welcome enquiries from any potential students interested in contemporary history: 1. Improving and Building Museum and Archival Collections: We prioritize community-led approaches, ensuring that our research and collections empower diverse voices and traditional knowledge. 2. Security and Development: We analyse historical contexts to better understand current security and development challenges. 3. Democracy and History: Examining how historical narratives shape and influence democratic processes. "Our fieldwork experiences reveal the complexity of the answer to the question ‘why we are not doing research in our home countries’. Addressing this complexity necessitates genuine dialogue and reflection undertaken by both Global South and Western scholars; to create academic spaces to appreciate diverse and multi-layered insider and outsider experiences, to design epistemically just doctoral training programs without imposing singular positionalities, and to build equitable partnerships with the Global South knowledge institutions that might transcend to increasing Global South researchers studying the Global South." https://lnkd.in/dtdwv7Uw

Precarity really needs urgent attention but this very difficult work is often avoided as ‘a sector problem’. We all struggle to do something about contract length at university level in any way that is meaningful, that’s for certain. We need the organisations who are the sources of funding to be willing to make large changes urgently. We are also reliant on our university HR functions - if they are not well resourced, agile and open minded, they create challenging roadblocks. But there are issues of research contracts that we can turn our attention to here now. At Glasgow, work is underway to understand the individual issues and cultural habits that make up the ‘Employment of Researchers’ (Researcher Concordat 2019) and complicate the picture of ‘precarity’ and the consequences of precarity - these include scrutinising policy, process transparency and agency/empowerment related to: Appointment policy and processes Hiring manager competence Grading of new staff Contract type and nomenclature Induction Probation PDR/Appraisal Promotion The career pathways available Fractional and honorary contracts Redeployment processes Exit support We can’t wave a wand and make 10 year contracts. But we can start with the above whilst we put pressure in the right places to look at how research is funded.
We have recently published two briefs on precarity in academic careers and recruitment practices that form part of our background research to understand current practices around research culture issues in other countries. The briefs are based on responses from our partner institutions, the #UniversityofEdinburgh, #LeidenUniversity (The Netherlands), #FreieUniversitätBerlin (Germany), and #ETHZurich (Switzerland). Both briefs can be found on our website: https://lnkd.in/gHNzcsQU. #researchculture Postdoc Academy, University of Cambridge Postdocs of Cambridge Society (PdOC) Andy Jackson National Centre for Research Culture Alex Peden Steve Joy

Theme for 2025: Migration The James Smithson Fellowship for 2025 invites applications for the theme of “Migration," which could encompass everything from the movement of monarch butterflies to the diaspora of humans across time and space. Migration has been central in our evolutionary dynamics, population genetics, and ecosystems. It also has deep significance as it profoundly impacts cultural identity and expression, reshaping communities and altering cultural narratives and artistic practices that foster new forms of creativity. Taken together these transformative processes create a rich tapestry of diverse experiences and influences that illustrate how migration shapes both our natural world and our cultural landscapes. https://lnkd.in/eTFiCCYG
