This article has been three years in the making so I'm very excited to share it! CSU universities have partnered with Tribes to support them in their work to preserve their heritage, including languages, cultures and traditional ecological knowledge. In honor of National Native American Heritage Month, learn about a few of these efforts. https://lnkd.in/g9TdU8MP

The humanities have a real impact on people's lives and are essential now more than ever. As our world becomes more divided and exceedingly reliant on automation, only the humanities (and the arts) allow us to connect and see each other as wholly human.
⏯️ In May, we invited leaders from NYS organizations that incorporate the humanities into re-entry work to an all-day convening in NYC. Catch a glimpse of the incredible day on our YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/eYyVu23y 🤝 Connections made and ideas and knowledge shared throughout the Post-Incarceration Humanities Partnership (PIHP) grant’s lifecycle are shaping the landscape of re-entry work in NYS and beyond. Special thanks to Mellon Foundation for their generous support of the PIHP program.

Powerful societies are strategic in teaching their children their way of life, philosophy and culture. What is the Saint Lucian vision philosophy and culture? Do we teach it nationally? The Youth Summer Arts Platform is but one critical seed in nation building and citizen development.

At CEHD, faculty sabbaticals are more than academic breaks - they're opportunities to make a lasting impact. Professors Avi Kaplan and Christine Woyshner exemplify this through their recent work. 🔬 Kaplan applied his Dynamic Systems Model of Role Identity in global initiatives to help communities foster agency and identity exploration. A Smithsonian collaboration even redefined how museums engage visitors. 📚 Woyshner’s research on Black civic organizations highlights their vital role in education before Brown v. Board of Education, showcasing resilience and advocacy in the face of systemic barriers. Read more: https://ow.ly/J4tI50UkiZg

Today with my students in the School of Humanity summer program we were focused on Systems Thinking and how everything is interconnected. We explored 🌟 The Parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant 🌟 In this ancient tale, six blind men encounter an elephant for the first time. Each man touches a different part of the elephant and describes it based on his own experience: One touches the trunk and thinks it's like a snake. 🐍 Another touches the tusk and believes it's like a spear. ⚔️ The third touches the ear and says it's like a fan. 🌬️ The fourth touches the leg and compares it to a tree. 🌳 The fifth touches the side and thinks it’s like a wall. 🧱 The sixth touches the tail and believes it's like a rope. 🪢 Each man argues vehemently about his own perception, not realizing they are all partly right and partly wrong. None of them can see the whole elephant. It got me thinking how often in life we make decisions or judgements based on our limited experiences or knowledge and not how those decisions or judgments are a part of a bigger picture. So here are some things I will be taking away from the Parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant. Moving forward I will remind myself on a daily basis to embrace diverse perspectives 🤝🏽 always remain open-minded 🧠 and make sure to see the bigger picture 🔍 These are all things that I typically do… but often don’t prioritize. I am grateful to have had this reminder today. What did you take away from the Parable of the Blind Men and the Elephant 🐘 ✨ I’d love to see your thoughts in the comments 💬

I’m excited to share my video as part of Knowledge Now: Grad Research @ York University, where graduate scholars are tackling the most pressing social issues through innovative research. My work focuses on: 1. Systemic Discrimination in Education and Youth Protection: Examining how policies in education and youth protection systems contribute to systemic barriers for racialized youth and uncovering strategies to promote equity. 2. The Intersection of Poverty and Race: Investigating how poverty and race intersect to impact access to justice for Black youth in urban areas and exploring community-based interventions that address these disparities. Watch now and join the conversation on building a better tomorrow: https://lnkd.in/e-75Dbmm
