The Heat is already here impacting many that we do not see or hear and have very little to do with the climate conditions they are enduring. I believe we are presented with opportunities to mitigate the worst outcomes associated with the heat which is death by ensuring under-resourced communities are not just talking points but part of the solution.

Strong similarities exist with the 1995 Chicago heat wave, which occurred thirty years ago on July 12th. I encourage initiatives and conversations to take preventative actions, as cooling centers appear inadequate with the growing vulnerable populations. Would higher awareness of heat dangers, cooling center knowledge, public transportation tailored to mobility challenges, and low-cost climate control tactics help? Lowering costs of air conditioning or related services?

This year we unveiled 20+ policy ideas for mitigating extreme heat’s effects across infrastructure, public health, agriculture, and more. But we aren’t the only people talking about this (excuse the pun) hot topic. In Dallas, the heat is on... and on...and on....and on... Persistent extreme heat is becoming the new normal. In light of this, should cities like Dallas create a Chief Heat Officer position? Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Miami have already done so. Given the many environmental challenges that need to be addressed and the reality of bureaucratic silos and competing priorities, it seems that a city like Dallas would benefit from having a dedicated individual or team focused on heat mitigation.
