🎶 PLAYLIST 🎶 Sometimes lifting your mood takes more than a cup of coffee or walk outside- especially when it's hot and humid. Neuroscientist Dr. Jacob Jolij found that the happiest tunes are slightly faster than your average song (between 140 and 150 beats per minute), written in a major key, and either about happy events or complete nonsense. These are the Top 10 he came up with. What would you add? Let's make a mood-boosting playlist! Since most caregivers are in a time crunch, here's a link to Spotify with these songs ready to go: https://lnkd.in/eB_ZMqD. #caregiving #caregivers #longtermcare #eldercare #caregiversupport #musictherapy #diagnosis #dementiasupport #dementia #parkinsons #cancer #ALS #multiplesclerosis #cancersupport #moodboost

One of the hardest things to do when you're a #caregiver is to know how to respond when someone asks how they can help. It seems like it should be easy, but we've been there, and it's not. You're so mired in the everyday details and schedules that it can be very difficult to pull yourself back to a bird's eye view. We've created this document as a conversation starter for anyone who wants to offer #caregiving help but isn't sure what to say, and for caregivers who are asked but can't think of what they need. We would love your feedback on what else should make the list! What have you done for someone, or has someone done for you, that lightened the situation? #caregiversupport #grief #longtermcare #eldercare #hospice #specialneeds #dementia #cancer #parkinsons #cardiovasculardisease #diabetes

Words of encouragement today, shared by someone in our Carefullist Community. Change is difficult. It’s ok to struggle with it. We do best when we give ourselves time to adjust and then go with it as it comes. Most caregivers don’t start out as change rockstars, but they do get there out of necessity. Give yourself time and grace. #caregiver #caregiving #Caregiversupport #grief #griefjourney #griefsupport #hospice #eldercare #longtermcare #dementia #cancer #parkinsons #ALS #specialneeds #specialneedsparenting #aginginplace #dementiacaregiver #sandwichgeneration

Most people have a greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease as they age. For Latinos—the fastest-growing group of older adults in the United States—some risk factors seem to matter more than for other groups. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that by 2060 the number of Latinos age 65 and older is expected to nearly quadruple, and Latinos will face the largest increase in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia cases of any racial/ethnic group in the United States. Certain factors may put some Latinos at increased risk, including low socioeconomic status, lots of cardiovascular disease, and a higher prevalence of conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and depression. Studies have identified these risk factors and Latinos should use that information to improve their odds against Alzheimer’s. Studies show that people can make changes that might reduce their risk of Alzheimer’s disease or other types of cognitive impairment. I call it my baby souvenir. It's not that I LOVE the extra, ahem, “softness” around my middle, but… I’ve accepted it as a mom’s badge of honor… and a simple souvenir that’s harder to shake with age. But lo and behold, a new study shows that shake, I must (while also hitting the weights more often)… IF I want to lower my risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementia. More specifically, and according to an article in U.S. News & World Report (link below): “The researchers found that folks with relatively high levels of belly fat were 13% more prone to a neurodegenerative illness. High levels of arm fat were linked to an 18% higher odds for these conditions, compared to people with slimmer arms, the team found. On the other hand, people who had relatively good muscle conditioning were 26% less likely to develop diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, the research showed.” Perhaps NONE of this is surprising, given the research also shows higher fat levels caused higher rates of heart disease and stroke, too; and we already KNOW there’s a correlation between heart disease and neurodegenerative illnesses. (As my friend Carla – yes, Carla with a “C” – once quipped: “What’s good for the heart is good for the brain!"). Long story short: Sure, I can embrace my baby souvenir… but if I want to boost my chances of embracing those very babies longer in life… then shake that souvenir, I must. As always, please reach out with questions or thoughts about ALL the latest research. Always here to listen, share and learn. Here’s a whole other level of… We’re not alone. We’re simply not. And in this World Alzheimer’s Month, I humbly believe it’s important to remember this disease knows no bounds or borders. The World Health Organization estimated, back in 2019, that there were 55 million people living with dementia worldwide. And context is needed here, because: 1, Over 60 percent of those people live in low- and middle-income counties; and 2, Every year, there are nearly 10 million new cases. By my math… that means the number of people living with some form of dementia is actually closer to 105 million. Staggering, I know. But here’s the other meaning of… We’re not alone. Again, we’re simply not. Because there’s a vast village of supporters willing to walk alongside you or your family, if you’re living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Please never hesitate to reach out, if you need further proof of that fact: Karla@SoManyGoodbyes.com 💜 So Many Goodbyes #WorldAlzheimersMonth #Alzheimers #dementia #caregivers #ENDALZ #SoManyGoodbyes #AlzheimersSupport #dementiaSupport #CaregiversSupport #AlzheimersFamily #dementiaFamily #AlzheimersDaughter

I listened to a group of women talk, laugh and cry together last night. It wasn’t a support group, per se. Just a group of women with a shared connection to a fabulous friend and leader. But the support group lessons were laid bare: A community gives comfort and emotional support. A community gives practical advice and exponentially expands your opportunity to network and troubleshoot. A community gives you a break from your challenges… it interrupts the routine to remind you, you’re not alone. If you’re on the Alzheimer’s or other dementia journey, please know… Support groups do exist specifically for you. AARP and the Alzheimer’s Association have provided a helpful tool to find a group near you (or a virtual option). I'll paste below a link to that Community Resource Finder. Please let me know if you need help navigating this tool. For that matter, if you need to vent, laugh or cry, of course you can also always reach out to me. Again, I’m honored to serve as a one-way support group for my So Many Goodbyes families. You’re not alone. 💜 https://lnkd.in/gZC-j3iU So Many Goodbyes #SoManyGoodbyes #ENDALZ #Alzheimers #dementia #caregivers #AlzheimersSupport #dementiaSupport #CaregiverSupport #AlzheimersFamily #dementiaFamily #AlzheimersDaughter

As people grow older, the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease increases significantly. Experts estimate that the number of individuals aged 65 and above with Alzheimer's disease doubles every five years. However, it is important to understand that age alone is not the cause of Alzheimer's, even though it is the most significant risk factor. #AlzWell #Alzheimers #Dementia #Caregivers

20/20 hindsight. I believe all of us who’ve lived and loved throughout the Alzheimer’s or other dementia journey… have a touch of 20/20 hindsight. We realize what we could have done better… How we could have managed better. Cared better. Loved better. None of us is perfect. All of us does the best we can. But I also believe we can humbly share our own clarity in hindsight to help others living with or loving through Alzheimer’s or other dementia… today. Which is why I recently wrote these words to one of my So Many Goodbyes families: “It’s very easy to be overwhelmed by the challenges of this disease, but it’s possible, and even critical, to still care for yourselves. You can find a balance and preserve your other identities and roles in life. Your [loved one] would want that for you; truly, [they] would.” And with that, I humbly share that clarity with you, too: Please do accept offers for help… or even seek out the resources in your village. I promise… it’s from my own hindsight, that I believe your loved one would want you to also care… for you. 💜 Please reach out if you need guidance or want me to listen: Karla@SoManyGoodbyes.com So Many Goodbyes #SoManyGoodbyes #ENDALZ #Alzheimers #dementia #Caregivers #AlzheimersSupport #dementiaSupport #CaregiverSupport #AlzheimersFamily #dementiaFamily #AlzheimersDaughter
