It will be interesting to see where this new venture goes, especially with the power brokers that are behind it. I was fully aware about the story behind the distillery in Muenster, including how the original owner fought like crazy to make it successful and finally “threw in the towel” last year with the decision to sell it off. As this article details, there are some industry experts who question whether they can carve out a niche in the rather crowded premium spirits category. https://lnkd.in/gp52gzF2

Founding Director at corporate communications agency Freer Consultancy, columnist at The Scotsman TW: @freerconsults IG: @freerconsultancy
R&B Distillers Limited has announced a reorganisation of its senior executive team, with William Dobbie appointed as Managing Director and his father Bill Dobbie switching to the Chairman role at the company he co-founded with Alasdair Day in 2014. Bill Dobbie, Chairman, R&B Distillers, said: “William has helped drive double-digit revenue growth at over 20 per cent per annum during his four years as Commercial Director, and R&B’s Board was unanimous in its decision to give him the opportunity to lead the company’s next phase of growth. We have continued to see solid growth in the UK and internationally over the last few years, including during what was a challenging year for the industry in 2023, and are excited by our prospects to build sales in existing and new markets over the next decade.” R&B Distillers owns the Isle of Raasay Distillery, which opened its doors in 2017, and plans to launch the Machrihanish Distillery near Campbeltown on the Mull of Kintyre over the next 12-18 months, which will mark the first new farm distillery in the region in over 180 years. There are also longer term plans for The Duke Street Distillery at Coldstream in the Scottish Borders. R&B Distillers reported revenue of £5.0 million in the year ended 31st December 2023, and now sells in 40 markets worldwide after launching the Isle of Raasay Gin in mid-2019 and the Isle of Raasay Single Malt at the end of 2020. The company has set its sights on growing sales to over £25 million in the next decade. William Dobbie, Managing Director, R&B Distillers, said: “The whole team deserves so much credit for our success to date, and our 10-year vision is centred on taking the business to the next level, increasing our international presence in lucrative markets like North America and Asia. While the high end of the whisky market has come under pressure over the last year, we have managed to significantly increase sales, grow a loyal customer base and brand in the face of industry headwinds.” The Isle of Raasay Distillery, based on the Inner Hebridean island off the west coast of Scotland, sells directly to tens of thousands of consumers, and through hundreds of outlets in the UK and via distributors worldwide. The distillery, which has a visitor centre and luxury accommodation, won Distillery of the Year and Tourism Destination of the Year at the Scottish Whisky Awards in 2022. R&B has a team of 47 people, with 35 based on the Isle of Raasay, supporting long-term local employment for the community. R&B’s senior management team also includes Stuart Blues (Finance Director), Norman Gillies (Operations Director), and Alasdair Day (Co-founder and Master Distiller).

What's in a name? If you poke around whisky cask investment sites for even a short amount of time, you will come across casks labelled with names like "Teithmill", "Blue Hill" or "Wardhead". A small amount of digging will lead you to the perplexing discovery that there are no distilleries under these names. So... where are these casks from? These are what are referred to as fillings or trade names. If you buy a cask of whisky which is labelled with a fillings name, there are restrictions on how you can label the liquid when it is bottled. Usually, the distillery cannot be mentioned by name even if you know for sure where it is from. In the case of Wardhead, it can only be bottled as a blended malt, not a single malt. There are other fillings which are similar in this regard. So, why do they exist? These brands essentially exist to protect the brands of the distilleries. Because their distillate is in someone else's care, they have no control over how it is matured, and eventually bottled. So should you consider buying one of these casks? Well the answer is, it depends. On the plus side, they are usually cheaper than a distillery branded cask. On the other hand, the reputation of the distillery is more difficult to leverage when labelling and selling the whisky. Some bottlers have worked out some slightly cheeky ways to get around this, but that is a story for another day! If you know, you know. Slainte!

It is always good to start with basics as some of the time people are quite shy to ask what they think most know already. The fact is the majority can always learn something new. For example I didn't know that some labels show the original cask ABV Strength ! Whisky Cask Club Advisor and Sales Director James Kaaden explains in detail the labelling and information on a bottle of Whisky. What's does all of the information on a whisky bottle label mean? It can be pretty overwhelming when you try to decipher the label on a bottle of Scottish Malt Whisky. Distillery produced bottlings are usually kept deliberately simple, but as you will see, the amount of information you can find on the label of an independently bottled whisky can be staggering! In the picture below, the bottle on the left is a distillery core range release, and the bottle on the right is an independent bottling from the same distillery bottled by Gordon & Macphail, a fantastic independent bottler of whisky. Whisky enthusiasts love the transparency and full disclosure that comes with this type of bottling. Hopefully this picture gives you some guidance in your whisky journey. Questions? Comment, DM, or email me and we can delve deeper!
