In 2022, Hurricane Fiona caused extensive damage in Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec. To help affected communities and businesses rebuild, resume economic activity and adapt so as to be prepared for future extreme weather events, the Government of Canada established the Hurricane Fiona Recovery Fund (HFRF). In Quebec, the Fund was coordinated by CED. Today, we announced that 20 affected organizations in the Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Gaspésie, including 5 municipal governments, received financial assistance under the HFRF that allowed them to: • meet their immediate needs and thus recover more quickly from the consequences of Hurricane Fiona; and • take steps to reduce their vulnerability to future extreme events, including improving climate comfort centres. "The entire house seemed to be coming apart. My husband shouted 'RUN', and we raced towards the hospital. When we emerged...we were on a different island". It's been eleven weeks since Hurricane Beryl devastated St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Shanika's story still breaks our hearts. Our teams quickly mobilised, with respect going to MapAction, World Food Programme, World Central Kitchen and other key partners for their swift response. Our Responders are still there, and have been working tirelessly in collaboration with many, including working alongside the National Emergency Management Organization, Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), Water Mission, Sol Relief, and the incredible people of Union Island to restore their lives and homes. This effort has been further strengthened by our recent MOU with NEMO, ensuring a more streamlined and effective disaster response across the region. Malibu had an earthquake this morning, Southern California (and elsewhere) is battling multiple wildfires and the Gulf coast was struck by another hurricane yesterday. One of the biggest challenges for families and children in a disaster is displacement due to damage and destruction of housing. This disproportionally impacts families who live paycheck-to-paycheck, are on public assistance, or have nowhere to go. While emergency shelters provide "temporary" relief, these families and their children are known to become "more vulnerable" after these incidents. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, our team at Shield and Castle is closely monitoring key damage indicators to understand where infrastructure enhancements are needed, particularly across Georgia, where many of our clients are located. So many lives have been impacted and forever changed, and our mission is to fortify communities to lessen those impacts. We are mobilizing our team and resources to be on the ground soon to support recovery efforts. It's often the rural communities that are hardest hit and most overlooked.
