THIS IS THE CLIMATE CRISIS Just turn up the air conditioning. Unless you don't have ac. Or there's a power outage. Or you can't afford the electricity. Or you live in one of the increasingly hot countries where air conditioning is just a dream.

The city of Sugarland is considering building a natural gas power plant near thousands of residents. Mayor Zimmerman argues that this will prevent blackouts during extreme weather. However, if approved, residents may face multiple negative impacts: - The power plant may not prevent blackouts. - Toxic gas emissions will occur. - Health risks such as increased cancer rates and heart disease will rise - Property values will decrease. - Safety threats rise. - Noise pollution increases - More extreme weather events including + winter storms + summer heat Waves - see houston 2023 and phoenix below + flooding Zimmerman is working against the majority of residents who oppose this plant Let's work together to stop the Sugarland power plant. #StopSugarlandPowerPlant https://lnkd.in/gQpZYvAy

This polar vortex will be a test for the U.S. Midwest electric grid. Weather-dependent, intermittent electricity from wind and solar will *not* save the day from this polar vortex sub-freezing temperatures, and the increased demand for energy for heating which will accompany it. Homes heated with propane and natural gas should be fine though. For info, this link is saved on my phone (poweroutage dot us) https://poweroutage.us ======================== "Parts of the West and Midwest are set to be hit with temperatures as low as -50F as an Arctic blast makes its way to the region. A polar vortex is forecast to sweep across the Pacific Northwest before making its way into the Central and Midwest over the course of the next five to ten days, according to one meteorologist. It will bring with it blisteringly cold temperatures of -50F, more than 78 degrees below the average for this time of year. According to weather outlooks from the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center, the cold snap looks set to arrive late next week for Central and Eastern regions. Meteorologists have warned an ongoing stratospheric warming event over the North Pole could displace the polar vortex, causing freezing air to engulf the Lower 48 states. ..." https://lnkd.in/edn4GubC

A few years ago I learned about the polar vortex and how it can affect us in the winter. This article is a great explanation of what we are seeing right now and why. I don't know where you live but in northern Washington State it is 4 degrees Fahrenheit and -16 degrees with the wind chill. North Dakota, I don't envy you (-50 temps), not one bit, stay safe out there! #climate #energytransition https://lnkd.in/d79pWRUg

As global temperatures soar and extreme weather intensifies, the summer of 2024 is poised to be one of the most volatile yet. From unprecedented heatwaves scorching regions to devastating wildfires and hurricanes wreaking havoc, the unmistakable impacts of climate change are upon us. With El Niño winding down, the shift to La Niña threatens even more unpredictable weather patterns. Are we adequately prepared for the challenges ahead? Embracing #solarenergy is not just a choice but a necessity for climate resilience. Homeowners and businesses who proactively adopt solar + #battery storage systems fortify their homes against power outages during extreme weather events. Beyond personal protection, these systems reduce reliance on strained #grids, contributing to broader community resilience. As we brace for the storms of tomorrow, investing in clean energy is pivotal to safeguard our future. More from Grist.

"One of the most dangerous illusions of the climate crisis is that the technology of modern life makes us invincible. Humans are smart. We have tools. Yeah, it will cost money. But we can adapt to whatever comes our way. As for the coral reefs that bleach in the hot oceans and the howler monkeys that fell dead out of trees during a recent heat wave in Mexico, well, that’s sad but life goes on." "This is, of course, an extremely privileged point of view. For one thing, more than 750 million people on the planet don’t have access to electricity, much less air-conditioning. But it is also a naïve point of view, if only because our bubble of invincibility is far more fragile than we know." Forget winter wonderland. How about winter horror show? Snow can be fun until it takes down trees and powerlines. This just happened Tuesday in Pennsylvania. More than 115,000 people were left without power and some are still in the dark as I write this post Thursday afternoon. The take-away is that power outages happen without warning and are not only inconvenient but downright dangerous. In our effort to decarbonize the economy, we are relying more and more on electricity with heat pumps, EV’s and basically all of the essentials of life. The impact of a loss of power is more devastating than any time in our history. Climate change is fueling extreme weather conditions that lead to an increase in the number of outages and outages that impact a larger geographic area and longer recovery times. We have achieved nothing as it relates to climate change and the forecast is that weather will continue to get worse for at least the next couple of decades. It is vital that you prepare for increased and longer duration outages. The best way to prepare is with backup power as a service. Exergy Energy, your Concierge Utility ® can keep you operational even when the power goes out. All with no upfront capital cost.
