Geomagnetic Disturbance Warning – Is Your Power Reliable? PJM Interconnection, the largest power grid operator in the U.S., issued a possible geomagnetic disturbance warning yesterday through this morning. These rare solar events can disrupt electrical grids in unexpected ways, despite PJM working to coordinate with transmission owners to mitigate risks. Even though PJM did not anticipate significant impacts, it serves as a reminder that power quality issues can stem from sources we rarely think about—like the sun. From solar flares to severe storms, the need for reliable backup power has never been clearer. Businesses relying on continuous operations can't afford to leave power quality to chance. A dependable backup power system ensures that no matter what happens, your business stays powered and productive. Don’t let unexpected disruptions affect your bottom line—plan ahead. #BackupPower #BusinessContinuity #PowerQuality #GridResilience #SolarStorms #Future #Management https://lnkd.in/ea9kFncg

As power grid demands soar due to the rise of data centers, AI, electric vehicles, and more severe weather, businesses and homeowners alike face an escalating challenge. The CEO of Generac highlighted in a recent CNBC interview that during the first nine months of 2024, a staggering 1.2 billion hours were lost to outages across the U.S. While renewable energy sources like solar and wind are expanding, they’re intermittent, leaving gaps that the grid struggles to fill. This issue will only grow, especially as the increasing intensity of natural disasters continues to strain infrastructure. With hurricanes like Milton hitting Category 5 status, it's clear that extreme weather is reshaping how we must approach energy resilience for those facing devastation from storms. https://lnkd.in/e6vwWSQg #PowerGrid #EnergyResilience #BackupPower #ExtremeWeather #Sustainability #Future #Management

My heart sank.
Why you need a backup generator Hurricane Helene was a horrific storm and our prayers go to all those affected. The following statistics from Georgia illustrate why backup power is necessary because outages can last a long time. After Super Storm Sandy, the last facility to get reconnected had been out of power for 31 days. Over 80% of outages are due to downed wires caused by weather events. Just for the state of Georgia Hurricane Helene caused: 5,000 power poles that need to be repaired or replaced 1,500 trees fell on GP power lines Image how long it will take to handle this devastation. All states and utilities chip in to help, and repair crews from across the country have arrived to help and restore power as quickly as possible. But it will take time. Imagine if multiple geographically dispersed events occur closely in time. This resource sharing would be impossible and the number of people without power and the length of time they are without power will dramatically increase. Climate change makes this increasing more likely. #climatechange #poweroutages #hurricanehelene

Have it your way.
Electricity is a service; not a commodity I am an avid follower of Doomberg (https://lnkd.in/ekzM4DbU) and Decouple (https://lnkd.in/dJqxrhkd). In today’s Doomberg article, Mark Nelson (https://lnkd.in/d6RCPWdK), a nuclear energy expert and advocate and frequent guest on Decouple, made the following statement and I quote: “Electricity is not, and never was, a commodity. It is a service with strict and uncompromising location- and time-based constraints.” I have never heard a better description of the electricity system we enjoy and demand. It should have been more obvious to me that we do not purchase electricity. We purchase the opportunity to have electricity delivered when and where we want it. We don’t need to store it or manage it. I don’t get box of electrons from Amazon and pour them into my cell phone. No, I flick the switch and like magic, the electricity I need, when I need it, where I need it, exactly as I need it is now at my finger tips. I bring this up as we discuss decarbonization and the energy transition. Pundits are always equating the electricity from solar and wind to be equivalent to that provided by natural gas or nuclear. This is not only an inaccurate equivalency but a dangerous one. Intermittent renewables cannot supply electricity, when you want it, where you want it, and exactly as you need it. To be called electricity (in the way I am defining it here), requires a complex support structure and system behind it to make it the service we demand. The costs of this behind the curtain support is never factored into the LCOE, which states that solar is the cheapest form of electricity. As the energy transition proceeds and more intermittent renewables come on the grid, the “service” aspect of electricity is likely to suffer. This is why Exergy Energy, your concierge utility, exists. We make sure you get the electricity when, where and exactly as you need it. Exergy allows you to continue to enjoy the electricity service you rely on.
