MOVING TO CANADA: Where should immigrants seek support and information? https://lnkd.in/geFZu9si Recently watched the podcast with Nick (Naeem) 🍁 Noorani and absolutely agree that government and non-profit organizations need to step up and provide more relevant information to newcomers, especially regarding the job market and settlement process. Many are left searching for critical information and the only guidance they can find is how to book an appointment. There’s a serious lack of clear, updated details on what steps to take next. It's disheartening that much of the available information is outdated, using methods that no longer apply in today’s rapidly changing world. The need for change is obvious, and providing engaging, up-to-date information shouldn’t be too difficult. The real issue is that it requires extra effort, and sadly, not everyone is willing to put in that work. This gap in reliable information leaves room for scammers to take advantage of vulnerable newcomers who are desperate for guidance. Many have been frustrated by unhelpful organizations and start feeling discouraged. They need support—whether in employment, settlement, or otherwise—from people who won’t dismiss them with statements like, "Go work at Starbucks because you’re new here and shouldn’t expect to get a good job right away." Just imagine—this was a real quote given to someone with a Master's degree, who speaks five languages, including fluent English! For people like that, who lose hope and trust in the system, there needs to be more accessible and relevant information. If government and provincially funded organizations provided better resources, they would not only help newcomers find suitable jobs faster, but also increase their reach and effectiveness in supporting the community. Ultimately, it starts with those of us working in these organizations. We need to reflect on our own attitudes—toward our work, our clients, and the community. Each day, we should be asking ourselves: What can we do today to better support immigrants and contribute to the country we've chosen to call home? #NonProfitCareers #CommunityOutreach #FundraisingTips #NonProfitLeadership #NonProfitSuccess #WorkLifeCompass #CareerDevelopment #SocialImpact #NonProfitProfessionals #CanadaNonProfits

Senior Adviser, Communications, Partnerships, & Policy, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Washington DC. Global communicator, connector, wordsmith, adviser, advocate.
The Migration Policy Institute (MPI) has a terrific compilation on the tragic waste of human capital that occurs when highly educated immigrants are underemployed--and that's millions of people in the United States alone. Here's a shoutout to MPI for tracking this phenomenon so rigorously, and to the nonprofit Upwardly Global for its tireless work over many years to help us all by helping newcomers find work that leverages their learning. If now isn't a time when we need all hands on deck to solve huge, existential challenges, then I don't know what is. Here's a link to support them: https://lnkd.in/evuHy4dA

Some people see an immigrant or a refugee; what I see is someone who was brave enough to leave everything and everyone they know, pack their lives into a handful of suitcases, and get on a plane with a one-way ticket to travel across the globe. This journey leads them to live in a place they may have never been before, embarking on a whole new chapter in life. In a world that often categorizes people based on their origin, it's crucial to shift our perspective. As an immigrant myself, I intimately understand the profound bravery it takes to uproot one's life, compress it into a few suitcases, and board a plane with a one-way ticket. This is not just a physical relocation; it's a profound act of rewriting one's destiny. Imagine leaving everything behind, not knowing what lies ahead, and stepping into a new country, a new culture. This isn't merely a change of address; it's a metamorphosis of the soul. It's about crafting a new narrative in a place that may be unfamiliar, yet holds the promise of hope and opportunity. Every immigrant and refugee carries within them a unique story, a mosaic of experiences, dreams, and aspirations. It's not just about starting anew; it's about the resilience to adapt and thrive in an environment that might be vastly different from what they've known. As a non-profit leader and fellow immigrant, I've witnessed firsthand the impact of providing support, resources, and a welcoming community. Our work goes beyond statistics; it's about recognizing the shared humanity that unites us all. It's about fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment for those who have taken the bold step to redefine their lives. Let's challenge ourselves to see beyond stereotypes and labels. Instead, let's celebrate the strength, determination, and richness that immigrants and refugees bring to the diverse tapestry of our communities. By acknowledging the resilience of those who have chosen the path less traveled, we can build a more compassionate world where everyone is valued for the unique stories they bring to the global narrative. #Empathy #ImmigrantJourney #RefugeeStories #Resilience #GlobalCommunity #immigration #refugee #compassion #nonprofit

First generation Latino college Student/ Legal Studies major @ UCB | Currently interning for Law Office of Yolanda Huang
The following is an infographic created by the Kaiser Family Foundation who are based in the San Francisco Bay Area. In their own words, they are “a non-profit foundation that does research, journalism, and communications programs… [and they also focus] on major health care issues in the United States.” This information graphic from them highlights a substantial issue that many immigrants in the United States are currently facing. That being that many of them don’t have access to basic information about immigration policy to really comprehend how it affects them, or what part it could play in their lives. It also doesn’t matter if they’re likely undocumented, have their green card, or are a naturalized citizen. It still disproportionately affects them. This could be due to a plethora of reasons, such as them not having access to necessary tools, such as a reliable connection to the internet, or perhaps they do not know how to read in English yet. This is a sad statistic to see, as immigrants should have the right to be informed on what their rights are in our country, as they very well could be life saving in some circumstances. As the child of an immigrant from Mexico, I wish only to ensure that people from my family’s home country are protected by having the right knowledge, as well as the means to gain said knowledge. Hopefully in the future, more awareness and access to tools that shed light on immigration policy can be spread to ensure that most, if not all, immigrants are aware of what policies are affecting them. I would also like to include this link to a section from the American Civil Liberties Union website, that highlights and details the rights that immigrants in the US should know they have. https://lnkd.in/gpWWBiS9

Newfoundland and Labrador seeks partners to enhance immigration settlement services Newfoundland and Labrador's Department of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills has issued a call for proposals under its Settlement and Integration Grants program. The initiative aims to boost support for newcomers by partnering with various organizations, including non-profits, educational institutions, and local governments. With funding of up to $300,000 available per project, the program focuses on two key areas: economic integration and settlement services. These efforts come as the province experiences a significant increase in immigration, with permanent residency numbers rising by 56.9% in the past year. The program seeks to improve labour market access, credential recognition, and community integration for newcomers. #immigration_support, #newfoundland_and_labrador, #settlement_services, #newcomer_integration, #economic_growth
