Results Focused CEO I Helping AEC, Emergency Response and Technology Companies Hire Top Tier Technical Talent
This is the biggest hiring mistake I see leaders making in skilled trades 👇 They use titles to assume it leads to an outcome. What I find is titles for a position such as laborer or finish carpenter can mean so many different things based on the type of client you're working with or the type of project you're on. What I always recommend is to instead lead with the outcome in mind. Tell them the top three things you need this person to accomplish on a daily basis. For us, internally, that's called the quality, pace, and production. Every position we talk about in the skilled trades boils down to what is your expectation on quality, what is your expectation on production, and what is your expectation on pace? Those 3 things together help to make sure that whoever we present in front of you is focused on executing exactly what you need from them on a daily basis, as opposed to having the right title but not necessarily ready to deliver exactly what you need. Construction Recruitment Specialist Partnering with GC's and Construction Tech - Founder @ Mountaintop Recruiting
Getting the best PM’s/ Superintendents to join your small to mid-sized contractor isn’t that complicated But lots of GC’s are missing some key steps. ⬇ ⬇ Here are three common mistakes that sabotage success: 1- Assuming candidates will find you. Posting jobs on your website or LinkedIn and expecting that the best people will flock to your open jobs: You don’t have the visibility of a larger contractor. So don’t compete with them there. The best Superintendents in the area might be open to working with you… But they won’t know about your opportunity if you don’t reach out to them directly. 2- Relying on salary to win candidates. Construction candidates make a lot of money these days. They know that any contractor worth working for will be able to pay them competitively. Competitive pay has to be the starting point, not the selling point. 3- Not selling yourself in interviews (this is the secret!!) Yes, there is a lot more to a PM/ Super position than who you report to. But being able to envision you as someone they could learn from and grow with will make good candidates a lot more likely to come over. The clients I work with that get who they want, do this. Most construction leaders do not sell themselves to prospective candidates, But those who do, stand out.

If you’re an owner/operator, you’re eternally torn between... Building your sales pipeline, and performing the work you already have. Recently, we worked with a contractor who was in this exact position. Her bandwidth was maxed out, and despite steady revenue numbers, growth had stalled. She had an epiphany: to scale, she needed to split her duties. As a smaller residential contractor, running the business involved everything from pre-con, bid out, permitting, inspection walks, engineering & architectural sign-offs,...etc etc.. alongside BD efforts. No one sells like the owner, right? 😉 After a few hours of diagnostic meetings, we built a job description for a Director of Construction, and launched the search. We closed it out in under a month. Now, with a dedicated operational leader in place to focus on delivery, she's free to focus on implementing new systems, processes, and technologies, and, most importantly, working with customers—her passion and strength. The result? They are positioned for growth … and as an owner she now gets to focus in on her zone of genius. Remember, the cost of delegation can be minimal compared to the growth it enables. Build your bench, make your mark. . . . #hiring #construction #recruiting #bybmym

Www.AECNR.com It’s LIFO season I am seeing a lot of dog eat dog in the Drywall World Remember a few dollars today may mean nothing tomorrow when the LIFO bell rings in February. Salary vs security is the equation. As many of you know ,I spend some efforts in Horse Rescue and we have a saying about “ changing horses in mid stream and especially when a storm is coming” the financial storm is coming in February and many companies will suffer the We Work fate as of this am where did that leave all their big hires .The inflated salaries became a burden and also caused the collapse today. We have secure Drywall jobs with salaries commensurate to the real market in NY , NJ , PA big difference on being enticed or bought by the phony temp salaries. Bob@aecnr.com
