Let's talk STS! ⬇️ In the vast expanse of global trade, ship-to-ship operations emerge as a critical element, seamlessly connecting nations and facilitating the exchange of goods on a monumental scale. These operations, often overlooked in the grand tapestry of maritime logistics, play a pivotal role in sustaining the intricate web of international commerce. Ship-to-ship operations, or STS operations, involve the transfer of cargo or resources between two vessels at sea. This can be done with the vessels at anchor, underway or moored, and requires great experience and expertise. This maneuvers are especially vital in locations where the depth of water or port facilities may be insufficient for larger vessels. Picture colossal tankers anchored off the coast, engaging in a carefully orchestrated dance to exchange everything from crude oil to liquefied natural gas. Although ship-to-ship (STS) operations often suffer from a negative perception regarding environmental issues, they are routinely conducted across various locations each day without any incidents or harm to the environment. This positive outcome can be attributed to the involvement of skilled and experienced crews in these intricate operations and the stringent adherence to safety standards. What about you? Have you ever been part of an STS operation? What was it like? History is made in Southampton On May 1, 2024, the Port of Southampton reached a significant landmark by simultaneously accommodating two of the world's largest container vessels, a feat marking a first in its storied history. The maneuvering of these ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) into the DP World-operated terminal was expertly handled by the UK port's Marine Pilots. This achievement underscores the advanced capabilities and readiness of the port to handle such massive maritime traffic. Associated British Ports (ABP) has strategically enhanced the port's infrastructure by widening the channel within the Western Docks. This expansion has been pivotal, enabling the passage of the largest container ships alongside the mammoth cruise ships that are regular sights at the port. "The expertise, dedication, and thorough preparation of our team were crucial in ensuring the safety and efficiency of this operation," commented Steve Masters, Southampton Harbour Master. "Prior to this operation, our Pilots and tug crews engaged in extensive training and simulation exercises to master the complexities involved in handling CAT 7 Vessels. Their dedication to understanding every facet of the operation facilitated a flawless and secure docking process for the MV Manila Express," he added. The successful docking of the ultra-large vessel at Southampton DP World's SCT 2/3 berth was a collaborative effort involving multiple departments. The ABP Southampton Marine Department, including the Harbour Master, Pilots, VTS, Marine Planning, and Hydrography, all played critical roles in this achievement. Captains Noel Charlton and Chris Hoyle, who were responsible for the Act of Pilotage for the "Manila Express," shared their thoughts on this milestone. "It's a remarkable accomplishment for the Port to manage the simultaneous welcome of two of the largest container vessels. This success was made possible through close collaboration with the vessel's captain and crew. The collective efforts of all the specialist Pilots, tug crews, and other stakeholders were instrumental in this pioneering endeavour," they stated. This historic event not only highlights the Port of Southampton's operational excellence and commitment to maritime innovation but also solidifies its position as a leader in global maritime logistics. #containerships #shippingcontainers #transport

ONEX-Attica: The signature for the first newbuild after 17 years at the end of May: As part of the ONEX group's agreement with Attica totaling 1 billion euros, the Elefsis shipyards will build the first new ship for the Greek shipping company, after almost 20 years The Elefsis shipyards will start operating as of May, while at the same time they are claiming the contract for the reconstruction of the four frigates MEKO of the Hellenic Navy. The company is also in discussions with a foreign, non-European company for the construction of passenger – ferry ships. As the managing director of ONEX Panos Xenokostas revealed in a meeting with journalists, an agreement will be signed with the Attica Group by the end of May for the construction of a passenger ferry, 100 meters long, which will be duel fueled with methanol. This ship will be based on the model of blue star ferries but with a new design. Xenokostas announced that two 28-meter tugboats will also be built at the Elefsis shipyards’ facilities on behalf of a Greek company. Finally, he pointed out that ONEX has submitted a bid for the reconstruction of the four frigates of the Hellenic Navy. “For the upgrade of the four frigates, we have given a very competitive offer to the German company that built them, and we expect, like the Skaramangas Shipyards, that the Navy will call us, which also has the last word.” He clarified that “it is a given that we have the ability to do it. We will be very happy even if we don’t get the program and the Skaramangas shipyards get it. It is a given that both we and Skaramangas have the competence to undertake the upgrade project. We are not competing with the Greek shipyards.” “The relationship with the Skaramangas shipyards, I clearly tell you, is excellent and complementary and nothing and no one can disrupt it. We are open to working with Skaramangas for MEKOs,” he added. The four MEKOs are between 25 and 31 years old, and once their upgrade is completed they will extend their operational life for at least 15 to 20 years. The 1-billion-euro deal As part of the ONEX group’s agreement with Attica totaling 1 billion euros, the Elefsis shipyards will build the first new ship for the Greek shipping company, after almost 20 years. “The cooperation memorandum with Attica Group is working very well and I believe that we will have signed the contract for the construction of a new ship by the end of May, for the first time in Greek shipyards after 17 years. It will be 100 meters long and have dual fuel capability, probably methanol.” Πηγή: naftemporiki.gr
