The Government of Uttar Pradesh (UP) introduced a draft of the UP Population Policy (2021-2030) aiming to reduce the gross fertility rate and stabilize the population. Historically, the two-child norm has seen attempts at implementation by various state governments over the past 20 years. The proposed UP Population Control Bill suggests that individuals with more than two children will be ineligible to contest local body elections, apply for government jobs, receive any government subsidies, also includes a ban on promotions in government jobs for those violating the two-child policy. The Uttar Pradesh State Law Commission (UPSLC) has titled the draft "The Uttar Pradesh Population (Control, Stabilization, and Welfare) Bill, 2021." Key Parliamentary Committees Begin Crucial Discussions Weeks after being constituted, essential parliamentary committees have started their meetings, addressing significant issues that shape our nation's progress. Among the key topics under review are: - **Reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)** – A critical step towards ensuring equity and representation in India's workforce. - **Audit of the Jal Jeevan Mission** – An important assessment of the nationwide initiative to provide safe and adequate drinking water to every rural household. These discussions reflect the ongoing commitment to fostering inclusion and ensuring sustainable development. The outcomes of these debates will likely have a far-reaching impact on social justice and public welfare. Looking forward to seeing the positive changes these initiatives will bring! #PolicyMatters #SocialJustice #WaterSecurity #ParliamentaryCommittee

The BJP’s success over the last decade of Indian politics—and its frontrunner status in this year's Parliamentary elections—has often been ascribed to its welfare policies. How does this "new welfarism" differ from the rights-based approach that preceded it? Where do technological mechanisms, from Aadhaar to cash transfers, fit into this model? And how does the political narrative underpinning this shift attempt to reimagine Indian democracy? In the second of our CASI Election Conversations 2024 (from Center for the Advanced Study of India), we speak to Yamini Aiyar, public policy scholar and former president of the Centre for Policy Research, about what she has dubbed the "techno-patrimonial state" and the creation of a new "labharthi varg," or beneficiary class that can be politically mobilized. https://lnkd.in/dEykxKs2

From a GDP maximising perspective, #Pakistan's population doubling to 400,000,000+ by 2050 is good From a liveability, quality of life perspective it is a major disaster when our status quo is 26,500,000 out of school children, highest prevelance of easily preventable diseases like Thalassemia (due to highest rates of 1st cousin marriages) #Bangladesh is better positioned to be become a middle income country with improved human development index compared to Pakistan because of its smaller population Tiny, post Communist Soviet #Estonia has exceptional digital adoption while we can't mechanize, automate basic govt functions as our humongous population demands forcefully creating bullshit Govt jobs doled out via political cronyism to the incompetent and the malicious If you have investments in sectors like Pakistan's Cement, Manufacturing, Banks etc. and a 2nd home in Dubai, Portugal, Houston etc. then GDP maximization is all that concerns for you Resident Pakistanis hopelessly stuck here in urban hells like Karachi should want Govt to do a hell lot more than just pin all hopes on a massive, booming population numerically doubling remittances, GDP also
Pakistan no longer has a population problem. Despite the fear mongering over a growing population, Pakistan is entering a sweet spot demographically in terms of the working population. What should we do? Perhaps begin by abolishing the Population Welfare Department. We do not mean to suggest that Pakistan’s population was never a problem. It was. But things change, and we in Pakistan tend to not pause to notice when things have improved. For the full story by Farooq Tirmizi, read on at: https://lnkd.in/dsBtecfj

"Just think about some of the more recent cash transfer programs that different political parties, including the BJP and the Congress, have launched. Youth unemployment cash transfers, cash transfer to particular kinds of skills, PM Kisan, a cash transfer to our farmers. The logic behind this is not that we are going to invest in human capital. We are going to invest in the economy. We are going to strengthen labor bargaining power. It is very much being built against the backdrop of an economy that is simply failing to provide jobs. This is the compensation that the state has to offer because, in a country with as much inequality as India, in a country where the poor are your primary voters, no matter how capital-friendly a political party is, it cannot go to the polls without offering or without engaging with the lived realities of the vast majority of Indians. That's the beauty of democracy, with all its attendant challenges." Where Yamini Aiyar is as always brilliant in conversation with Rohan Venkat Very timely and informative read.

It is well known that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have been among the most marginalised sections of Indian society. Successive governments have attempted to improve their conditions in different ways, including affirmative action and welfare programmes. This paper attempts a comparative study of size and related issues of these marginalised communities and highlights data gaps in evaluating state policies for their development. It also argues that while the state policy on data is ambivalent and incongruent, the existing policies of socio-economic development for the deprived and marginalised communities are populist in nature and centred on electoral politics. https://lnkd.in/gMCBM_n3

This report mirrors why women education and healthcare in Nigeria has made little or non existent progress. In a budget totalling 28.78 trillion naira, only 0.1% (613 million) and 0.2 % (1 billion) are allocated to projects on women education and healthcare respectively. while projects on women empowerment are highest at 0.46% ( 45 billion). According to the report, what is most interesting is that these empowerment programs are not specific. So we do not know exactly what empowerment these women will receive, yet it carries the largest chunk of funds. The questions is, why would you want to give nameless empowerment of 45 billion to women (49% of Nigeria's population) who only have 613 million for education and 1 billion for healthcare? What women empowerment is greater than robust investment in female healthcare and education?
