🦽 "My first job out of college was helping design new wheelchair models that were adapted to the context of Guatemala, for rural areas where terrain is very hard to traverse. To see people use the chair—the freedom that it afforded them—was very powerful to me. I haven't looked back since." Juan Carlos Noguera is an industrial designer and an assistant professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He receives a Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Design—a $50,000 award—for his use of design as a tool to empower accessibility and equity. Check out the ideas that emerged from our roundtable 'Public Art: Not Just a Nice To Have' below and read the summary at https://lnkd.in/erAY8dn7 👇
"Public art is a way of bringing people along the journey” This month UP Projects and Sheppard Robson Architects hosted a roundtable event that explored the positive role that art and artists can play in shaping places, including engaging communities and contributing social value. The roundtable challenged the idea that public art is just a “nice to have”; frequently being commissioned as an afterthought or because it has been stipulated as a planning condition. You can now read a summary of the conversation that brought professionals from across public art, architecture, private development and local authority sectors together to discuss what changes are required to foreground the value of public art. 🔑 Key considerations include timing, rethinking ideas of permanence and valuing process-driven approaches. 📄 Read it at: https://lnkd.in/eVcQvaqH Jo Baxendale Clarissa Bromelle FRSA Zerritha Brown FRSA Dan Burr Synthia Griffin Dann Jessen Moira Lascelles Adriana Marques Kevin McGeough Philippine Nguyen Olaide Oboh Jessica Reynolds Anna Shapiro Ian Taylor Emma Underhill Debbie Whitfield Emma Wilcox #publicart

Museum Consulting | Coaching for Nonprofit Professionals | Play based learning through Exhibits and Museum goodness!!
Exhibits aren't static.. ... even when you wish they were! When I first started designing museum exhibits with my team, we wanted to plan every little detail down to the placement of each loose part months in advance. But I've learned that the best exhibits aren't static - they evolve over time. These days, I advise clients to make sure to leave room in the initial design for improvisation. Maybe we keep some wall space flexible for pop-up displays or use movable kiosks that can be rearranged on a whim. Exhibits that can adapt keep people coming back! If everything is set in stone from day one, the display quickly feels stale. Sure, it's tempting to micromanage every square foot. Embracing some improvisation leads to exhibits that stay vibrant and relevant. Leaving breathing room in the initial design allows for new partnerships, community input, and timely content down the road. The result is an exhibit with real longevity - where the experience keeps improving after opening day. #leavingspace #improv #innovation #museum #exhibitdesign #inspiredimpact

A project of Andrew’s, Mary Hare Primary School, recently won an Inclusive Design award. Christopher Rudd , our founder & CEO, has been featured in the latest edition of DMI Review, where he explores how design can confront racism through intentional action with anti-racist design principles. His article, “How Can I Be an Anti-racist Designer? Design with Intent: Four Antiracist Design Principles to Guide You,” highlights how design has been complicit in promoting racism and offers four principles to ensure future designs actively dismantle these systems. By examining both design history and modern practices, he provides a roadmap for anti-racist design outcomes.
