Teaching and learning building at the University of Southampton gets the go-ahead! Our designs for a civic-minded new facility will transform a car park into a new campus destination where bold design ideas are grounded within a new landscape for students, staff and the community to enjoy. Commenting on the news, Sheppard Robson partner, Eugene Sayers, said: “The North East Quadrant project needed to have a magnetic quality, drawing students from the centre of the campus with buildings, spaces and places that signal the arrival of a game-changing facility for the University. “We wanted to create a landscape and building that are rooted in their surroundings and have a distinctive character to match the boldness of the 1960s campus. The variety of spaces created will allow people to use the buildings and landscapes in a multitude of ways and make them their own.” Read more about the scheme on Building Design.: https://lnkd.in/eR7PYeEN First visualisation by Hayes Davidson. #universitydesign #southampton #educationdesign #studenthub

Architecture and Planning
We are a collective of architects, interior designers and masterplanners.
About us
Sheppard Robson is an ever-evolving collective of architects, interior designers and masterplanners. Together our team of 370 people design buildings, spaces and places that are people-centred and precision-made. Our family includes our interior design specialists ID:SR and AXIS, which applies our detailed design expertise to major projects by others. From our offices in London, Manchester and Glasgow, we work on a scale, and with a legacy of expertise, that means we can engage with society’s most pressing challenges. The most urgent of these is the need to achieve a better balance between humans and nature on our planet of limited resources. With no single solution, the mitigation of climate change can only be achieved with the critical application of an inventive, multi-layered approach, and by fundamentally rethinking how we live, learn, work and play. Our work is the result of creative, technical and intellectual exchange. People-centred design comes out of an engagement process where architects enable, listen and interpret as well as lead. With a robust methodology for testing ideas, we are able to fine-tune them without losing their pioneering spirit. Every project we make presents the opportunity to push our learning a little further, but we never forget that innovation should always be in the service of a clear purpose – to design for life.

What a (Green) Week! 🌿🌳 This was our tenth year of establishing a week of events to bring us together and put sustainability front and centre. This year's theme was Urgency in Action, and we learnt so much in a week packed with events, including talks on intersectionality and the fundamental inequalities related to the climate crisis globally and in the UK; we heard about the role finance can play in driving this change and how we as designers can use our agency to support this; we reconnected with biophilia, toured exemplar buildings and projects, raised money for charities, and watched thought-provoking films. We also found time to have light-hearted moments playing games and connecting with our colleagues! We welcomed people into our London studio for our Accelerating Action panel discussion which focused on actions we can be taking now, next steps needed to accelerate these and some inspiring examples. A huge thank you to our sustainability group for leading this and to everyone who helped make it a success. The first details of our ongoing designs for 2-4 Whitworth Street West in Manchester have just been released. As Sheppard Robson partner Tony O'Brien comments in Place North West, the proposals “open up the site to create a new piece of public realm at the heart of the development, helping animate the streetscape and enhance connections from the city back to Knott Mill and First Street.” https://lnkd.in/eSdsBPT2

Yesterday we kicked off our 𝟭𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸, our annual week of sustainability-focused events. The theme this year is 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to recognise that although we’ve made strides in response to the climate crisis, there is still a lot we have to do and we need to act fast. The video below takes this same theme and reflects on sustainability in the past 25 years at both Sheppard Robson and within the wider industry, while emphasising the need for momentum in tackling the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. We also hear from members across our studios about their visions for a climate-aligned, future city. We’re delighted to announce that two of our projects are finalists in this year’s AJ Architecture Awards! Our designs for TTP plc’s new flexible HQ are shortlisted in the Workplace (£50 million and over) category. Set within rural Cambridgeshire, the campus provides a range of adaptable workspaces, driven by a strong focus on non-hierarchical, collaborative working and wellbeing. While, 68-86 Farringdon Road, with its distinctive concertina, metal façade, is a finalist in the Mixed-use category. Formed of a hotel and office, the two buildings come together to redefine the linear urban block into distinct legible forms that scale to the neighbourhood and animate the bustling London thoroughfare. https://lnkd.in/eiWY4eRk Architects’ Journal #AJArchitectureAwards #workplacedesign #mixedusearchitecture Photography by HUFTON & CROW LTD and Jack Hobhouse.

A big thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate 25 years of our Manchester office last week. New Century – the iconic venue we helped revive – was the perfect place to celebrate with many collaborators who have supported us over the years.
