Helping volunteers connect with inspiring causes. Formerly, VolunteerMatch, Skoll Foundation and Amazon.
Dr. Akilah Watkins' thoughtful letter on the end of Black History Month reminded me of The Bridgespan Group's data on Black-led nonprofits: "the unrestricted net assets of the Black-led organizations are 76 percent smaller than their white-led counterparts." According to data from Initiative for Strategic Volunteer Engagement, the majority of #nonprofit #volunteer programs are funded through unrestricted assets. If you put those two facts together, a clear implication emerges: to mobilize volunteers, Black-led organizations need our unrestricted support. They are disproportionately pulling from their core budgets to create these programs. Your individual donations (and corporate matching) provide this fuel. Celebrate #blackhistorymonth by helping to create a more just future. In that way, As Dr. Watkins' says, you are "building a healthier and more racially just nation for us all." https://lnkd.in/gH75JWxV https://lnkd.in/gSxsdcdW

In 2015, a groundbreaking study conducted in collaboration between the Greater Omaha Chamber and Urban League of Nebraska, Inc. laid bare the disparities faced by Black Young Professionals in Omaha. The findings revealed a notable discrepancy in satisfaction levels when compared to the broader young professional population, particularly concerning the availability of resources crucial for advancing their careers. Fueled by the urgency of these revelations, our Young Professionals chapter has been unwavering in its commitment to addressing these challenges head-on. Our tireless efforts are grounded in the belief that everyone, regardless of their background, should have equal access to opportunities for personal and professional growth. Through a range of initiatives, from personal and professional development workshops to impactful community service events, our programs aim not only to bridge gaps but to propel all young professionals toward success in Omaha's dynamic workforce. Yet, the impact of our work is tied to the generosity of our community. As we approach Giving Tuesday, we're reaching out to you, our community of supporters, to join us in making a difference. Your generosity will directly contribute to sustaining and expanding our initiatives, ensuring that the path to success is accessible to every young professional in Omaha. Click on the link provided to make an early donation and be a part of a story of empowerment, inclusivity, and collective achievement. Together, let's build a future where every young professional can thrive. Donate with this link: https://lnkd.in/dGRDQsQu Maher, Craig & King, Keyonna & Scarpa, Natalie & harder, Jeanette. (2017). Monterey County Black Caucus (MCBC), a grantee partner of Irvine's #PriorityCommunities initiative, works to anchor Black leadership and power-building to address structural racism and economic inequities. They also provide healing spaces that allow Black residents to unpack, reflect, learn, and share what the needs are in the community. How can #philanthropy better support MCBC’s work and the Black community? MCBC’s Rosalyn Green says, “They should continue providing funding, understanding the needs of the communities, and recognizing that one-time funding is not a cure-all. It’s important that funders dive deep into the proposals, listen to stories beyond those proposals, and take the time to come out and connect with the organizations and communities they support to see how funds are being used. Highlighting our work in philanthropic spaces is also important so that other funders can catch the fire and say, ‘We want to be part of that too.’” Learn more about MCBC at https://irvine.ly/mcbc Photo credit: Monterey County Black Caucus

Today is Juneteenth, a federal holiday and a day of great significance in the U.S. On June 19, 1865, an order was issued in Galveston, Texas, that ended slavery. Juneteenth is a symbol of liberation, resilience, and movement towards equality. Today is also a time to celebrate and honor African American achievements and culture. If you are looking for meaningful ways to observe Juneteenth, our Black Colleague Resource Group at BPM LLP shared these suggestions with our firm, and I am happy to share them with you: -Shop at Black-owned businesses: Make a conscious effort to support Black-owned businesses in your community or online. -Donate to nonprofits: Consider donating to organizations that advance racial justice and promote equity. -Support Black artists, authors, and musicians: Explore the works of Black creatives. Purchase their art, read their books, and or listen to their music. #Juneteenth #BecausePeopleMatter

🌟 Honoring Juneteenth at Clever 🌟 Tomorrow, we recognize Juneteenth, a day in 1865 when the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas finally learned of their emancipation more than 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth is a day that holds significant meaning in the ongoing fight for Black liberation today. We hope you will spend the day intentionally - whether that be self-education, allyship, or to simply rest and be with loved ones. ➡️ Ways to recognize: We encourage everyone to take actionable steps toward fostering equity. Support Black-owned businesses, donate to organizations that promote racial justice, engage in community service, attend a public celebration, read material on the history of and present day manifestations of systemic racism - particularly for Black communities. #LifeatClever #Juneteenth #DiversityAndInclusion #EquityInEdtech

As we close out Black Philanthropy Month we'd like to share some resources and food for thought for those interested in grantmaking, social investment and supporting diversity in Global Philanthropy. 1. Check out the following: https://lnkd.in/eFYHtrwS https://lnkd.in/e_7cdBdf 7 Faces of Philanthropy https://lnkd.in/eytYWB78 2. Black Philanthropy is unrecognised as 'structured' Philanthropy- $860bn of global Remittances to the Global South prove that giving is happening but we need to measure and be clear about the strategy for these social investments. Thanks to Thelma Ekiyor Dr. Jackie “Bouvier” Copeland Precious Zumbika-Lwanga MBA #VeronicamartinOBE #romeoeffs 3. Let's explore the concept of broadening the definition of Philanthropy - the love of humanity. If you feel good by giving if it makes sense to help Communities if you give you're time freely towards a cause if you're altruistic and want to "do the right thing" if you care about LEGACY and Generational Impact if you care about Social Justice if you support historically underserved and persecuted causes, visionaries and Communities ....then you're a Philanthropist. 4. Accountability, Governance and Impact Reporting structures are critical to Donors, so nonprofits need to get these fundamentals right. - your Boards, Policies, Financials etc. Promoters of social initiatives must clearly demonstrate that the funds are going to Impactful causes in total alignment with declared plans. 5. Advocate for funding equity and fair capital access for all - Global Africa only gets 1-2% of large institutional funds be it venture, philanthropic, funding for women, funding for Black women ... we must do better.

Comrades, did you know that August is Black Philanthropy Month? August is dedicated to Black Giving and we hope that you will support Creative Nomads in TWO Giving Days - CllctivGive + Give 8/28 (both donation links are in our Instagram bio @creative_nomads) The 2023 theme of Black Philanthropy Month is LOVE IN ACTION. Inspired by the times and the late scholar-activist bell hooks’ writings on love as a necessary foundation for true social change. This years goal envisions a field that moves beyond the rhetoric of philanthropy as love for humanity to make it real in Black communities. As you support Black-led nonprofits this month, here are some questions to consider and talk about with family and friends - What would philanthropy look like if it were driven by love of all humanity including Black people? What would Black-led philanthropy look like if it were driven by self-love? Building on our equity principles, how can the movement of Black Philanthropy expand love of Black humanity and equity? #BPM2023 #ArtOverEverything #TheCreativeNomads

I will post soon giving flowers to some phenomenal women I have had the privilege to know. But I first want to share a small tribute for a man who continues to inspire me. Although this was written from a perspective of fundraising & philanthropy, areas where Tom Ilube CBE excels, his imprint on our society extends far beyond. In a #BlackHistoryMonth where we are celebrating our sisters, I think its also appropriate to honour a man who has consistently opened doors for women, not least with his African Gifted Foundation and the African Science Academy. This month’s Civil Society magazine focuses on Black Fundraising for #BHM2023. There are interviews with notable expert by AmickyCarol Akiwumi MBE and editor Steve Cotterill. Please do read my homage to Tom on page 15 of the pdf here https://lnkd.in/eyvSCf8V. GiveBLACK UK Black Funding Network #philanthropymatters
