It’s Disability Voting Rights Week! Much progress has been made to ensure that our citizens with disabilities can exercise their right to vote. For example, accessibility at polling places has been improved, alternative voting methods like mail-in or online voting are becoming more widely available, and accommodations such as braille ballots or sign language interpreters have been implemented. These efforts are crucial in promoting inclusivity and equal participation in elections. Nonetheless, challenges persist. Beyond the physical obstacles to voting, discrimination, attitudinal barriers, and misinformation can also hinder participation. People with disabilities, even cognitive or resultant of mental illness, have the fundamental right to vote, just like every other citizen. New Jersey law specifically provides that a person retains the right to vote unless a court adjudicates that person to lack the capacity to understand the act of voting. Therefore, the appointment of a guardian does not automatically abolish a person’s right to vote. As we head into election season, everyone should have a plan to vote. Attached is a checklist for voters to use to make certain they are able to exercise this constitutional right. https://lnkd.in/e7BAiQfp #vote2023 #vote #voterregistration #disability #disabilityrights #manesweinberg

Our President, Cheryl Tung, and LWV-Wake members Elaine Okal, Kristen Howard, Helen Zimmerman and Marian Lewin participated in LWVUS's "Power the South," conference which brings together leaders specifically from the Southern States to analyze trending issues, receive trainings, and become equipped to empower marginalized and BIPOC voters in their Southern locations. The South was the birthplace of the US's civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s in the US, yet rights continue to be under attack with threats like rising white supremacy, patriarchy, continued classism, and authoritarianism. "Power the South" is LWVUS's movement to make our democracy more inclusive, equitable, and collaborative. Also included are a few photos from past years. How can you get involved in erasing inequality in the South? One of my favorite things about the Democratic National Convention and the amazing array of speakers is that Democrats are reclaiming patriotism and the American flag. It is long overdue. - Supporting democracy is patriotic. - Encouraging and inspiring voter participation is patriotic. - Promoting freedom is patriotic. - Welcoming immigrants and celebrating how the American story is an immigrant story is patriotic. - Choice is patriotic. - Advocating for a more just future is patriotic. - Believing that the best for our country lies ahead is patriotic. Now is the time to shed our cynicism about politics and governance and to fight for all of the above. Register to vote. Create a voting plan. Fly an American flag. Refuse to cede patriotism to the folks who think our best years are behind us. #democratsdeliver #democratsarepatriots #makeyourvotecount #turnpurpleplacesblue

🗳 VOTE 🇺🇲 VOTE 🗳 VOTE Those out who work the system to their benefit. Those Congressional representatives out who are not serving you and our constituency. 📣 LET'S GET REAL, HOW MANY...? Complain but do nothing EXCEPT complain? People call or write their Congressional reps about issues that affect them, their families, and community? People make appointments with their reps when they're in town? Americans are attending Town Halls or "Coffee With Your Congresswoman/man" asking their stance on issues? People are all talk, (or complain), no action? Americans fail to use their voices to honor and respect the right to VOTE? Are choosing to sit at home on the couch because they don't see the importance of our nation's direction and hope for the future to VOTE? People have looked the other way when games and shenanigans are played to benefit the wealthy? People want our representatives as role models for our children and future generations to learn from? American fail to heed the call for "All Hands On Deck!"? #VOTE #speakyourtruth #prisonreform #mentalhealthcare #mentalhealthawareness #equaljustice #loveandlight

Respecting the supreme law of the land in A. 15, 23, 24, and 26, the right to vote supersedes any state authority. It is the right of every U.S. citizen aged 18 and above and the right to vote may not be suppressed due to race, creed, or gender. This nation's law could not be any clearer, so why are challenges to the Fair Voting Act even arriving at the SCOTUS docket when they should be summarily dismissed in the lower courts? There is an extreme dysfunction in a system where justices do not rule abiding by the fundamental law of the land. It took 2/3 majorities in Congress to get these amendments passed, and now does a whole swath of Red States think that their own legislators can decide who can vote and who can't? Sorry, Constitutional Amendments must not work that way. And if they don't work, then it is up to us to vote for legislators who will expand the court and provide for the term limits that will limit the Supreme Court's ability to wield power unconstitutionally The right to vote is granted without question- it is not a 'privilege;' it is a right. It is clearly enshrined in the Constitution of the United States in the 15th, 23rd, 24th, and 26th Amendments, having more amendments than any other issue (count them, four). If state legislators such as those in Louisiana, Texas, and North Carolina (among others) refuse to provide fair and open voting and free elections in accordance with the nation's Constitution, they must be forced to through executive power.
