Chief Executive Officer of Whitehead-Ross Education | FSB South East Regional Chair | Magistrate | ERSA Board of Directors
When I say “further education” most people will instantly think colleges. However, independent training providers (like Whitehead-Ross Education) make up the bulk of the #fe sector. I recently came across this excellent report published by the AELP with key facts about independent training providers (ITPs): ✅ Over 1,700 ITPs deliver publicly funded education, training and apprenticeships. ✅ Out of 1.7m adult learners in 2022/23, 35% of learners accessed courses delivered by ITPs. ✅ 62.8% of all apprenticeships (173,000 learners) are delivered by ITPs - far exceeding colleges. ✅ In 2022/23, £186m of adult skills delivery was by ITPs. It’s crucial that the #spendingreview and #budget2024 doesn’t just prioritise colleges, as ITPs play a significant part in the UK skills sector. Overall, the cash outlay on post-18 further education, higher education, and adult apprenticeships is around £27bn. Just 7% is spent on adult education. Even less is spent on Level 3 and below provision. A mere 2% of this £27bn is allocated to tailored learning for adults attending local community education and skills centres. Our residents with lower skills deserve better. The 'context' of work has changed drastically over the past few years and will continue to do so with the increasing importance on digital skills, the introduction of new technologies, the focus on new sectors like the green industries. Adult Community Education deserves better. Step2Skills #adulted

Senior Low Carbon Consultant - focussed supporting organisations with green skills and jobs, retrofit and low carbon heat
FE colleges in my network - interesting news from my old colleague Laurence at the Department for Education. They are launching an FE funding simplification pilot! This could be relevant to many of you working to deliver more targeted funding around retrofit and green skills. The link to apply to join the pilot and further information is below. As always if you have any questions or support, we're here to help!
~ Do you think skills funding is too complicated? ~ We want to test some ideas we think could make administering the £7bn system simpler and more efficient. 🧠 So we're launching a pilot: 🐇 Giving colleges more flexibility by removing several funding rules and some ringfences. 🌱 Allowing pilot colleges to deliver Skills Bootcamps without needing to bid for funding via procurement. 📊 Simplify audit and back-end data processing. ✅ Developing ways we can simplify apprenticeships, such as onboarding, test new funding approaches and streamline end-point assessment processes. Colleges can apply to take part via the link. Deadline is Wednesday 31 January 2024. https://lnkd.in/grAuG-yU #skills #productivityboost Exeter College Bridgwater & Taunton College Middlesbrough College Loughborough College Association of Colleges

In-Comm Training and Birmingham City University have secured funding to embark on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) that will use AI to transform the way apprenticeships and learner journeys are managed. The announcement was made recently and was highlighted as being one of the key projects in the company’s pursuit of operational excellence over the next five years. Funded by Innovate UK, the focus of the KTP will be on the implementation of an AI-powered Learning Management System (LMS) that will provide real-time data on all aspects of operations at In-Comm Training’s Technical Academies in the Black Country and Telford. This will cover and enhance the learning journey of more than 2500 apprentices and learners accessing upskilling courses, not to mention engagement with over 700 SMEs and large employers across Birmingham, the Black Country, Telford and in wider Shropshire. William Penterman, a legislator from Wisconsin, has introduced a new bill aimed at addressing the educator shortage by establishing a teacher apprenticeship program. This proposed legislation seeks to revolutionize the pathway for aspiring educators by introducing a "2+2" model, allowing individuals to teach after completing two years of general studies followed by two years of specialized training. Currently, prospective teachers are required to undergo a four-year education program along with an additional semester of student teaching to obtain their teaching license. The proposed bill could potentially streamline the process and offer alternative routes to licensure. Across the nation, teacher apprenticeship initiatives have garnered backing from both sides of the aisle. In July 2023, the Biden administration disclosed the availability of over $65 million through the U.S. Department of Labor to support teacher apprenticeship programs across states.
