These are in some ways similar to predatory journals, which promise to publish research of any kind without proper peer review — for a fee. And, like predatory journals, predatory conferences can be hard to define. Criteria often listed include weak or no peer review for presentations, poor organization and a focus on making the organizers money.

One of the main reasons for this is the pressure on academics to publish their research in order to get jobs and promotions. Here are my suggestions to address this issue: * Raise awareness: Educating researchers, institutions, and funding bodies about predatory journals and conferences is crucial. * Create a database: A publicly accessible database of reputable journals and conferences in various fields would be a valuable resource for researchers. * Legal action: Standardized laws around the world would help to hold predatory publishers and conference organizers accountable. * Rethink promotion criteria: Instead of focusing solely on the number of publications and conferences attended, institutions should consider the quality of the research. What are predatory journals? When looking into publishing in a #nursing journal, it’s important to be aware of predatory journals. Predatory journals are publications that claim to be legitimate scholarly journals, but misrepresent their publishing practices, often asking for fees to publish an author’s manuscript. It can be very hard to tell a predatory journal from a legitimate one. That is why it is important to check if a journal is listed in the INANE Directory of Journals. If it’s not listed there, be wary. 🚩 🚩 Negative consequences of predatory journals (not exhaustive list): ‼️ You could be scammed out of money and lose your work. ‼️ Once you are published in a predatory journal, you often cannot publish that work again in a legitimate one. ‼️ Fake peer reviews provided by predatory journals weakens research.
