 "Until the 1990s, biologists grouped plants based on structural similarities. These physical similarities grouped cannabis and hops under the order of plants called Urticales. They did not consider that Hops have a few of the same constituents as Cannabis - terpenes and cannabinoids. The invention of DNA sequencing changed things; scientists realized that Urticales wasn’t a true order and that the groupings of flowering plants needed to be re-arranged and placed in proper orders based on DNA instead of Structure. In 2003, molecular biologists from the US and UK confirmed that Hops and Cannabis Sativa-L were very closely related cousins and belonged to their own family, which they decided would be Cannabaceae. For those who are not biologists, we can look at a family like Cannabaceae and relate it to our immediate family. The further out in your family tree you go, the less related you are. The same goes for plants. It's a tad deeper than that. Classification systems developed before the 1990s, such as those of Cronquist (1981) and Dahlgren (1989), typically recognized the order Urticales, which included various families including Cannabaceae, Cecropiaceae, Celtidaceae, Moraceae, Ulmaceae and Urticaceae. Molecular data from the 1990s showed that these families were actually embedded within the order Rosales. From the first classification by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group in 1998, they were placed in an expanded Rosales, forming a group that has been called 'urticaria rosids' and eventually named Cannabaceae. -Mike Robinson, Founder Nanobles Corp. / Global Cannabinoid Research Center (GCRC)
