Sarah Ward of Cognitive Connections to Speak at Tower School “Practical Strategies for Improving Students' Executive Function Skills” November 14, 2023. 6:30–8:00pm Executive function skills are the skills we use to pay attention, organize and plan tasks and materials, start tasks and stay focused on them, manage emotions and be flexible, and keep track of what we are doing. In this practical strategies seminar, parents will: • develop a solid understanding of how these skills impact a student’s academic and personal performance • implement strategies to help students initiate tasks, follow routines, transition between tasks, think in an organized way, and manage homework  • gain strategies to help students internally feel the sweep of time, focus, and complete tasks in the allotted time • show students how to plan and complete homework, tasks, and chores with less supervision and fewer external prompts This event is free and open to all parents in the greater community. “However, if we want to play a serious role in supporting the GCSE attainment of young people from underrepresented backgrounds, we can’t simply add a couple of slides to those presentations on confidence or study skills and call it ‘metacognition.” As a WP practitioner who hasn’t had teaching experience, I found this article particularly inspiring. Instead of getting trained to become the ‘teaching expert’, it’s more effective to bring the experts together, and work collaboratively with them to support students. To contribute to the attainment raising objective, universities have their own unique resources and strengths, so do WP practitioners.

As higher education professionals, we continuously strive to improve our teaching methods and enhance the learning experience for our students. One powerful tool that can significantly contribute to our professional growth is reflection. Reflection allows us to critically assess our teaching practices, understand what works well, and identify areas for improvement. It's through reflection that we can truly understand the impact of our teaching on student learning and adapt our methods to better meet their needs.
