Why a £3billion pound Sandwich shop gave me a Free Meal? Last Saturday, after volunteering to feed families and children in my community, I drove about 30 miles to another town, still wearing my volunteer shirt. As I walked into a sandwich shop 🥪🥪🥪, the person at the counter recognized me as part of the Gillingham S.T.R.E.E.T Angels, a group dedicated to feeding families and children in the community ensuring no child goes to bed hungry. When I went to pay, he insisted, "No, take it for free." He explained that Pret a Manger, the company he worked for, supports the homeless through food giveaways. Lesson Learned: Corporate Kindness: This experience showed me that even big companies like Pret a Manger are compassionate and actively support their communities. Building Loyalty: Acts of kindness, like providing free meals to volunteers, not only support those in need but also build loyalty and goodwill within the community. It's inspiring to see how businesses can make a positive impact beyond their products or services. What does your brand mean to you? How are you contributing to your community? It's not about how much time you have, it's how you spend it. One of my team members had a goal to volunteer, but couldn't figure out when to do it even with Volunteer Time Off time allowed. I suggested they pick a day, request the time off now and plan to volunteer at that time. This morning, I volunteered at Hope Helps to pack bags of food for local children so they can have food during spring break. We packed 182 bags. This morning, I received an email with the subject line "Skyrocketing Tuna". I immediately imagined it written in Indiana Jones font, advertising the lamest adventure movie ever. Once I stopped giggling, I was able to review a very serious report from our supply chain team. Simply put, a can of tuna fish - a staple of my childhood and Crosslines food pantry - has increased in price 70% this year. Seventy percent. In the last five months, we've seen 49% more families at Crosslines than we did in the same time last year. Last year was up 20% from the year before. Even after streamlining our services and consolidating under one roof (a measure which cut our utilities in HALF) this rapidly increasing demand for services is quickly outpacing our available resources. Inflation is hitting food prices hard. And it's hitting Crosslines too. We are stretched. Thin. Some simple math for you: A flat budget + 49% increase in demand + 70% price increase = Tuna is something we may no longer be able to provide the hundreds of families who visit us each week. What is it worth to you to feed a hungry child? Is it worth the price of a can of tuna? What if it was your child who was hungry? Will you help us, help them?
