What does procurement have to do with wellbeing? Simply put, it's about how city, state, federal and philanthropic decisionmakers spend money. When treated as a strategic lever, procurement can help to tackle the root causes that hold problems in place. National League of Cities highlights how New London reimagined the City's procurement process to align with wellbeing, with lessons learned and recommendations for cities seeking transformative change: ✅ Involving community members in the process ✅ Holding a shared vision of creating a fair shot at wellbeing ✅ Spanning boundaries across agencies ✅ Collecting data to shine a spotlight on systemic challenges

The results of our latest research were published today, showing the decisions that councils have been making to balance their budgets for the next financial year, and how those decisions might impact the services that councils provide to residents. Eighty-five per cent of councils said they are having to make cost savings to balance their 2024/25 budget, even after the recent announcement of an additional £600m funding. The research shows clearly that acute funding pressures remain and are forcing many councils to make stark choices about what services to cut next year, including local neighbourhood services which are very visible to residents, such as waste collection, road repairs, library, and leisure services. You can read the research and the LGA’s thoughts about it: https://lnkd.in/eP2_Usyz #localgovernment #localgov #funding #savelocalservices #research

Tackling the housing crisis and managed homelessness motivates many in our AtkinsRéalis community to affect change that directly impacts families positively. Our ecosystem approach to aggregation, digitally-enabled, community-based, brings wisdom upstream. Enabling social rent homes in the heart of existing communities, benefitting from existing social infrastructure creating space for nature. Leveraging industrialised construction (MMC) with approaches such as EDAROTH UK that unlocks challenging small sites. We are delighted to be participating in an exhibition at the Building Design centre in October 24. A great conversation yesterday John Bonning, the opportunity to improve the fundamentals to human health and wellness. Enablers that create a foundation in which to thrive. Bringing Intelligent Health UK to the forefront. To deliver at pace to address this humanitarian emergency we must deploy different models, requires a shift in mindsets and procurement as an enabler and not a barrier. We must account for the risk of doing nothing and prioritise the financial articulation of 'life satisfaction' in our business case models. I'm reaching out to all those passionate about recovery, community, and inclusivity. Alongside of my work at Jericho House, a group of us are forming a committee with the objective of transforming Derby into an Inclusive Recovery City, and we need your support, skills, and enthusiasm to make it happen. What is an Inclusive Recovery City? A city where sustained recovery takes root and flourishes, not just within services, but throughout the entire community. An Inclusive Recovery City (IRC) leverages the strengths and resources of the whole community, emphasizing recovery-oriented systems of care, lived experiences, and community assets. The vision is to create a supportive environment where recovery isn't just possible but celebrated and integrated into the fabric of our city life. Why is this important? Building Recovery Capital: Our aim is to provide individuals with the necessary resources to support their recovery journey. This involves removing the stigma and discrimination associated with substance dependence and promoting understanding, support, and opportunities for recovery. Community Focused: Recovery happens within the community. Effective recovery communities are a vibrant resource that enhances the overall well-being of everyone, not just those in recovery. Visible and Celebrated Recovery: By making recovery visible through public events, we can reduce stigma and promote a sense of solidarity and inclusion. How can you help? We are looking to form a local IRC council that should consist of representatives from lived experience, service providers, policymakers, city council members, employers, and citizens. This council will oversee the creation and implementation of a comprehensive plan to make Derby an IRC. Your participation can make a significant difference. Join Us! There are 10 Inclusive Recovery Cities already in the UK, including Nottingham, Sheffield, and Middlesbrough, and many more around the world. If you're passionate about community building and recovery, we’d love to have you on board. This is a chance to be part of a transformative movement that can make a real difference in people’s lives and enhance the quality of life in Derby. Drop me a message if you’re interested in getting involved, and feel free to repost or tag anyone who might be keen to join this initiative. Let’s work together to make Derby a centre of hope and recovery for all! https://lnkd.in/ek2MhxNN https://lnkd.in/eVb4YjEK https://lnkd.in/eX3aaygR #InclusiveRecoveryCity #CommunityEngagement #Recovery #Derby #JoinTheMovement #BuildingrecoveryCommunities #SecondChances

Another local authority declares a “Housing Emergency “ - notwithstanding the inability to meet statutory housing requirements ( a system and legislative framework which the whole sector signed up for without really knowing the long term consequences and customer trends and expectations) - what does an Emergency actually achieve that shouldn’t already be happening? - such as meeting “internal and external partners to map out a way forward.” In my mind it’s no different than any other local authority and public sector funding crisis and where the other public services have had to redesign services and reprioritise the allocation of resources to those in greatest need - often in the face of massive public opposition. There needs to be a fundamental strategic review of both national and local housing systems - to understand cause and affect - and consideration given to where spend to save will lead to innovation- clearly keep doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome is not working!

New research out today from The G15 has found that social homes are crucial to preventing London becoming unaffordable to key workers, young families and those on low incomes. The research, part of the #RoomToGrow campaign, found that two nurses on an average salary of £38,000, sharing an average rented accommodation, would be unable to afford market rents in 14 of London’s 32 boroughs – effectively making almost half of London out of bounds for the important workers the city needs. As a member of The G15, we’re supporting the #RoomToGrow campaign, which shines a light on the real social and economic value created by London’s affordable homes. You can read the full report here, which includes research we produced with Sonnet Advisory & Impact CIC that found social housing in London generates at least £6.86bn per year for the economy and in savings to public services: https://lnkd.in/eMHisV6S

Yup new agency good idea in principle. But first things first surely? Let’s get the why, what, & how priorities clearly established, then do the who & when of, above all else, delivery. Planning & strategy etc of course but 1st things 1st. That means political will, money, & effective experienced based leadership & decision making in that order. Come on SNP.
interesting point about. Re-establishing a national housing agency to help deliver longer-term planning and greater certainty for social landlords. whilst I’m an advocate of this national housing agency- a colleague made a recent valid comment that this proposal risked distracting the sector from dealing with the issues at hand in the same way the national care sector proposal has done and before that - the establishment of Health & Care Partnerships https://lnkd.in/ejk7KSSK

“It’s about more than just doing our jobs – it’s about being a good neighbour.” - Ian Whittingham ❕A recent study by the National Housing Federation found that nearly 1 in 4 social housing residents in the UK are considered vulnerable – they’re dealing with things like physical or mental health challenges, disabilities and financial instabilities (National Housing Federation, 2022). 🟢 When these individuals feel safe, supported, and included in their neighbourhoods, it's a game-changer for the entire community. That's why we make the needs of vulnerable residents a top priority. 🟢 Beyond our day-to-day work, we're always looking for ways to give back, sponsoring local sports teams, helping with community gardening projects, and even providing funding for crisis shelters during the holidays. It's about more than just doing our jobs – it's about being a good neighbour and setting a new standard for empathetic, community-focused facilities management. 🤝 You can find out more about how we support vulnerable residents over on our blog: https://lnkd.in/emgKXSMP
