Democracy is about equal access and a fair shot for everyone. But let's face it, not everyone has the same access or influence. Recent attacks on democracy? They're attacks on wellbeing, too. But guess what? Wellbeing can be the key to healing. Imagine if we made decisions based on how they impact people's wellbeing. That's how we reshape systems and get closer to the promise of democracy. So, how do we make a society where everyone can access wellbeing? We start by putting community and wellbeing at the center. We all have a stake and a say in the policies that shape our lives. By strengthening access to democracy, fostering civic engagement and demanding accountability, we move forward together. Even in the democratic process, there can be unintended harm. But by prioritizing equitable access to wellbeing, we can undo past harms and restore communities left out before. It's about intentionally designing policies that promote wellbeing for all. Here are some guiding principles: ➡️ Start with what matters: wellbeing. ➡️ Design and implement with, not for. ➡️ Heal and regenerate. ➡️ Foster connections and social capital. ➡️ Span boundaries. Wellbeing isn't just a concept; it's a catalyst for healing our democracy. It's the conversation opener that brings people together from all backgrounds. Let's make wellbeing the framework for repairing, reengaging and healing our democracy.

Interesting read, shedding light on the interconnected goals of universal social protection (#USP) and universal health coverage (#UHC), emphasizing their mutual dependence! Citing WHO (2024), it notes that social determinants of health play a crucial role, influencing up to 50% of health outcomes, and notes stark inequities. The article outlines four crucial areas for advancing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), alongside two actionable priorities to enhance the impact of social protection in promoting health and wellbeing for everyone. https://lnkd.in/eP2F5m8G

In recent years, organizations have been expected to play a role in conversations around #socialchange. But according to a new survey from The Conference Board, less than half of US workers (44%) are satisfied with their organization’s response to social change issues like #racism and #gunviolence. Indeed, 87% say organizations should always or sometimes respond to social change issues. But the type of response is important: Most workers prefer that an organization take internal action rather than public action to address an issue. https://lnkd.in/g6VPgdWs

Director, Connections and Collaboration, Trio Health I Director of Communications, The Health Creation Alliance
HEALTH CREATION ON-LINE FORUM: A rights-based approach to health and wellbeing Tuesday 25 June @ 12:30-13:30 Led and facilitated by David Aynsley, Founder and Trustee of Tr14ers, a rights-based Community Dance Charity, and a THCA Associate Join Zoom meeting: https://lnkd.in/dXDHYqeC My human rights and your human rights are the same because they are universal. They are our human rights. This is about equity. What may not be universal is our access to our human rights or the state’s legal and moral responsibility to enable the causes of good health as well as remove the causes of ill health. This is about inequality. We must make ourselves familiar with our human social rights because they are one of the foundations on which a whole-system, nationwide, health creating approach can be achieved. Knowing our rights gives us permission to be inventive in redesigning services and pathways and take novel actions that enable more people to achieve their right to the best standard of health attainable. This theme runs through our recently launched manifesto like a golden thread and is included in the eight personal actions we can take to deliver change. Join us next Tuesday to hear more about how access to human social rights creates health and how Health Creation gives us access to our human social rights. This is reciprocity in action.

Yesterday the World Health Assembly endorsed a resolution to implement, strengthen and sustain regular and meaningful social participation in decision-making processes for health. Social participation, as defined by WHO, means empowering people, communities and civil society through inclusive participation in decision-making processes that affect health across the policy cycle and at all levels of the system. The resolution acknowledges the instrumental role that social participation can have in fostering mutual respect and trust, while making health systems more responsive, equitable and resilient.

A bit later than planned, but I finally had chance to read through the WHO endorsement on social participation in health, agreed a few weeks ago. A notable, though not necessarily surprising, absence in the list of countries proposing the resolution but otherwise a brilliant step forward for that this has been unanimously agreed and endorsed. It's particularly good to see an emphasis on long-term sustained approaches, addressing inequity, and creating the conditions for equitable, diverse and inclusive participation. It'll be interesting to see how Governments are held accountable for progress. Here's what WHO members are being asked to do: (1) strengthening public sector capacities for the design and implementation of meaningful social participation; (2) enabling equitable, diverse and inclusive participation with particular focus on promoting the voices of all those in vulnerable and/or marginalized situations; (3) striving to ensure that social participation influences transparent decision-making for health across the policy cycle, at all levels of the system; (4) implementing and sustaining regular and transparent social participation using a range of mechanisms supported by public policy and legislation; (5) allocating adequate and sustainable public sector resources in support of effective social participation; (6) facilitating capacity strengthening for civil society to enable diverse, equitable, transparent and inclusive social participation; and (7) supporting related research, and piloting projects/programmes and their monitoring and evaluation to promote implementation of social participation
