I finished the book, "Show Your Work," by Austin Kleon. One of his recommendations is to talk about what inspires you and sparks your creativity. What inspires me: being outdoors -- whether it's walking Rocky, riding my bike, or doing yard work. Anything that gets me out of the house is good! It's always been this way for me -- starting back in my college days, when I did boat maintenance at various locations around Alameda and Oakland, CA and had the joy (and good fortune) to work on the water, in the fresh air and sunshine. Being active outdoors puts my brain in a different state. I can often think through an entire article or marketing strategy for a client -- without consciously doing so. Instead, I'm focused on the various sights and sounds I see and hear. I often take photos of things that do inspire me: house or garden details, the way sunlight filters through the trees, landscapes, wildlife, historic signs or buildings, etc. Once back at my computer, I work on the tasks I've assigned to myself. I marvel at how things simply flow. Protecting this outdoor downtime is something I take seriously, because without it, I couldn't function nor create or accomplish all that I do. While out on a ride, I saw the cows -- who are normally on the other side of the road in a different field -- and stopped to get a few photos.
