**BREAKING NEWS** You’re likely more skilled than you think. Seriously. The problem might be that in the workplace that’s not recognized, at least by the ones who can promote you further. I was used to this environment for years. I’ve been passed up in numerous occasions as a tech for growth. I wanted to evolve a department to start servicing security equipment back when I was a data/voice service tech. When I approached my supervisor willing to learn, I was told, “It takes a certain kind of person to do security. It’s very complicated.” The next week he was training another technician in security, and took credit for the idea. Fast forward to when I started working in security (for another company). There, I was held back from what I could do within my role for the same reason, despite a proven track record of success in learning and implementing that knowledge in my work. It was at this point where I felt I needed to make a change, but years of being told I wasn’t THAT good had me doubting myself. So when someone reached out to me for a Security Analyst position, I almost didn’t respond. What’s the point, right? There’s no way I could be an analyst. Why set myself up for failure? But hey, the worst they could do is say no…and I’m right here at the same place. So I went for it. A few interviews later, and I’m trading my work van for a work cubicle. As it turned out the skills I had acquired over the years made me perfect for the position. All of the things I wanted to do and learn at previous companies I can, and it turns out that I’m pretty good at that too. I wish I had opened myself up to applying for those type of positions sooner! My point is that ambition is hard to break, but there are those who can chip at it piece by piece. But don’t fall apart. Don’t sell yourself short, because you not just a rock, you’re a rockstar! Take a chance on something you may have doubts about. It may be just what you need to put those pieces back together.

Isn't it enough to just get the vulnerabilities in front of the devs? Won't they just fix them from there? Nope. Why would they? What's in it for them? This is one of the biggest pieces missing in our industry. Many VCs, vendors, investors, builders are focused on AI and other solutions such as reachability, reduction of false positives, etc. to make the results better, which are noble efforts... but they're not not the whole story. You need to also focus on building solid relationships with your org and setting up proper incentives if you want to see action - and you need action from your engineering partners because your security team is not going to fix the issues themselves. 🚀 Excited to share that I have just completed the Software Engineering virtual experience program with Goldman Sachs on Forage! 🎓 During this simulation, I stepped into the role of a Goldman Sachs governance analyst with a focus on IT security. Here are some of the key tasks I accomplished: 🔍 Identified an outdated password hashing algorithm being used within the company by successfully cracking passwords with Hashcat. 📝 Wrote a detailed memo for my supervisor, summarizing a range of proposed uplifts to enhance the company’s password protection strategies. These recommendations included extending the minimum password length and implementing a dedicated hashing algorithm. This experience has significantly deepened my understanding of IT security protocols and sharpened my analytical and problem-solving skills. I'm eager to apply these insights in future projects and contribute to strengthening cybersecurity measures.
