Last week at The Watercooler & The Office 2024, the focus on Women's Health energising to see. Here's a glimpse into some of the sessions that took place: 📊 Women's Wellbeing at Work: A deep dive into the intersection of law and clinical health was led by Amy White and and Olivia Hum. From shedding light on menstrual health to highlighting the alarming statistic that 1 in 10 women have left jobs due to menopausal symptoms, the workshop emphasised the need for supportive workplace policies and manager training. 💡 Benenden Health's Gender Health Gap report revealed eye-opening insights: - 1 in 3 women reported receiving incorrect diagnoses, while 1 in 4 were prescribed the wrong medication. - Managing periods at work was found to significantly impact women's lives, with 70% feeling it makes things more difficult. - With 33% of women experiencing period-related jokes in the workplace and 40% feeling their health has hindered their careers, solutions like flexibility, robust wellbeing strategies, and a culture of openness are imperative. 👩⚕️ Women's Health and Wellbeing panel was a meaty one: - Dr Samantha Wild MBChB MRCGP DCH DFSRH DRCOG CIDC stressed the importance of normalising menstrual health conversations and providing support through training, access to products, and a flexible, open culture. - Heidi Yule shared the staggering statistic that it takes an average of 8 years and 10 months for endometriosis to be diagnosed, leading 1 in 6 women with the condition to leave the workforce. - Helen Tomlinson emphasised the impact that sharing lived experiences of the menopause has on the workforce, particularly as we work to foster cultures of compassion and openness. - Cathy Earnshaw-Balding MA, MCIPD offered the perspective of working in a male-dominated industry and underscored the necessity of ongoing, annual manager training and education. Everywoman Day 2023 will take place on the 22nd of September. This significant awareness day shines a light on common yet poorly understood women’s health conditions which can be painful, long lasting, and life-limiting. It aims to not just raise awareness but to raise hope, too. Our recent blog 'EveryWoman Day: Women's Health in the Workplace' delves into the health conditions that women face in everyday life and the workplace, providing actionable tips for supporting women's health and the flexible arrangements you can put in place for your organisation! From periods to menopause, millions of women across the world say their work life is affected by female health related issues. Our session ‘Waking Up to Women’s Health: The Story of ‘Sara' will raise awareness of some of the specific issues affecting the modern woman, following the story of ‘Sara’, and the health issues faced across her career, including fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, PCOS, and menopause. Using real-life examples, attendees will discover the reality of women at work, and how to actively support the many health challenges faced across their life. Objectives: - Understand the gender-specific health issues and challenges faced by women. - Raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention in women's health. - Encourage proactive adjustments in the workplace to support women. - Advocate for increased awareness of the challenges faced by women. With last year's rejection of the Menopause Bill by UK parliament due to fears of discrimination against men, an important spotlight has been shone on women’s health in the workplace. Whilst this issue is now gaining more mainstream recognition, women have been suffering silently in work environments for decades, navigating conditions such as menopause and perimenopause, endometriosis, PCOS and the symptoms associated with periods, which can all have a significant impact on women's ability to work. Women over 50 are the fastest growing demographic in the workplace. Yet around 900,000 women have quit their jobs due to the menopause. 34% of men say they would be embarrassed or ashamed to take time off work for mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression.
