Starting the week with a highlight from the last- absolutely loved seeing Kidney Research UK's workshop coming together with the aim of reviewing health inequalities 5 years on. Months of planning, and more to come, facilitating a wide range of stakeholders, change agents, and broader partners in having this important space to reflect, rethink, re-challenge. I always value being part of a research field where patients and their families are so generous with their time, and where you are never short of clinicians who may have no time but make time to enable research for patient and public benefit. When I started my research career, I wouldn’t have thought I’d be part of chairing a workshop like this, with a kidney research team pursuing a range of themes all related to narrowing health gaps. From the intersection of severe mental illness in kidney patients (Lauren Fitzgerald); developing a dialysis related distress tool (Emma Caton); to mitigating specific barriers to kidney research in those experiencing the clustering of disadvantage (Dr Emily Beadle). The best but most uncomfortable part of the day was the patient panel. I’m sure I didn’t always have the right words to express how such varied narratives hit me emotionally and professionally, but definitely a reminder of what we still need to recognise and remove as barriers to living well with kidney disease, or indeed doing more to prevent it where possible. Connection is a cure. To ourselves, other people and to nature. What a start to a Friday Morning to speak with 2 powerhouse doctors in the field of community and clinician wellbeing. Dr Emma Presern is a trailblazing GP with her Rebellious health program, midway through the first cohort but with an extremely bright future to help a nation of burnt out medics connect with themselves and each other. Dr Linda Mizun is a social genius A&E doctor who connects streets, neighbourhoods and whole communities in Sheffield and further afield around the topic of holistic, evidence based health. Love powers both of these fantastic women to build better systems and societies to maximise health in patients and clinicians. Today we scheduled a 10 minute catch up about our upcoming “Connect” webinar for Rebellious Health in July. It turned into a recorded 60 minute lively discussion about the immense power for community, emotional authenticity and lifestyle medicine to empower people. We talked about the “5 Secrets of Effective Communication Framework” from TEAM CBT creator, David Burns and how I use it to build trust in GP and cognitive therapy consultations. The bottom line to connection is this. Seek first to understand before being understood. If you are confused about why someone is thinking, feeling or acting in certain ways you haven’t asked the right questions or connected with them fully. It doesn’t have time take hours to connect. It can take as little as 60 empathic seconds. We will share our recording soon so watch this space. 😊

#Accountability, opportunities for early involvement, and thoughtfulness are paramount in patient engagement in research. My colleagues and I just published a paper describing how we engaged patient partners in helping develop a grant for a self-compassion intervention and a protocol for how we will engage patient partners once the project receives further funding. We also report on how engagement shaped the directions of our grant.
