Euro 24 Final Prediction: The Three Lions vs. La Roja. Out of 24 teams, these two giants of the game remain. A lot is at stake for both sides in this final. England, a nation that has failed to win a major international tournament since its triumph at the 1966 World Cup and has never emerged victorious at the Euros, looks to break its curse and end the despair of English fans. While Spain, a nation that has produced forgettable performances for the last decade looks to restore its honor and relive its golden era from the late 2000s to the early 2010s. But who will emerge victorious?  Of a very ebb and flow euros, Spain has remained the one constant. Delivering one breathtaking performance after another. Their two sensational wingers have caused problems for even the best defensive sides in the tournament, ranking the 2nd and 3rd for the most dribbles in the tournament. Furthermore, the midfield of Dani Olmo, Fabian Ruiz, and Rodri, continue to live up to the legacy of previous Spanish midfield greats.  The team as a whole ranks first in goals scored as well as joint second in goals conceded with the number 1 team having played two fewer games than Spain. The opposite however can be said for England. England have been crucified by the media for their slow, lethargic, and unaggressive style of play. They narrowly scraped through a relatively easy draw, have an over-reliance on its superstars to win games, and the entire squad, especially the manager has been scrutinized the entire tournament.  So, based on all of this everyone may think Spain is the clear favorite to win, right? Well maybe not, Let me explain. Spain's biggest strength is their creativity which is concentrated in the form of their wingers and attacking midfielder, who take on defenders one and one and use through balls to get into attacking positions. However, these strengths will be mostly neutralized against England because they play in a low defensive block with 3 highly skilled central defenders which gives them a numerical advantage. Furthermore, the presence of Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo allows England to clear any loose balls, provide extra defense, keep possession, and progress the ball efficiently. Additionally, England possesses superstar Forwards or attacking players such as Kane, Bellingham, Saka, and Foden that can target Spain's relatively inferior fullbacks. However, this may prove to be difficult as the defensive presence of Rodri, the best defensive midfielder in the world can make it a monumental task for the English to score.  Also, England possesses too many individual stars that can change the game and can be X factors. Taking everything above into consideration, I believe England will emerge victorious 2-1 in extra time to finally lift the euros for the first time in their history and break their 58-year international trophy curse. All being said I don't expect this to be an exciting contest like the 2022 World Cup final, but surely a historical one.

I, like many million fans across the world, once again found myself grappling with disappointment as the England team fell short in the 2024 UEFA Euro Finals. I grew up as a fan of the England football squad. I’ve celebrated their highs and endured their lows. Every championship, I cling to the hope that this might be the one where they finally clinched the title, only to be met with the familiar sting of disbelief.  The Finals against Spain was one of those times, echoing similar past failures in major tournaments. Euro'96 ended with a semi-final loss to Germany on penalties, and the 1998 World Cup featured another penalty defeat to Argentina even before the quarter finals. More recently, Euro 2020 concluded with frustration as England lost the final to Italy on penalties at Wembley, even though they had taken an early lead. Looking into the long history of the England squad, it’s clear that the team has consistently boasted top-tier players. Yet, they haven’t secured an international title since the 1966 World Cup. Reflecting on the recent loss to Spain, it was puzzling to see England retreat defensively. With midfield talents like Declan Rice, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and top scorer Harry Kane, they had the ability to dominate possession. Southgate could have capitalised on Spanish midfielder Rodri's leaving the field due to injury by pushing the midfield higher and applying pressure, disrupting Spain's rhythm. England should have prioritised ball retention and adopted a 4-3-3 formation, opening spaces for midfielders to support the striker. Dynamic players like Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins, who previously generated attacking threats, might have made a difference if they stood in the line-up instead of being substitutes. Football: the most difficult strike in the game Jude Bellingham’s overhead bicycle kick, made with power and elegance, is probably the most difficult strike in the game of football. If we did not know it from his performance at Real Madrid this season, this goal illustrates that he is a real rarity, truly remarkable. This is something that requires exceptional skill exemplified by (to pick a few) Marco Van Basten in 1986, Wayne Rooney in 2011, Ibrahimovic in 2012 and, perhaps the best of the lot, Gareth Bale in 2018, all of whom were exceptional players. One might add El Yamiq's attempt in the last World Cup, like Bale's (and now Bellingham's) done in the heat of an important competition. At the end of the first half in the first England game in these Euros, one notable pundit compared Bellingham to Messi. Probably premature. His performance since does not justify that, yet (?). He is not (yet?) like Messi the fulcrum round which the whole team turns. But if he remains injury free, it might well be right. He is already regarded at just 21 by many who should know as one of the best footballers in the world, known for his technical abilities (as we have just seen), tackling, vision and finishing, seen by this latest goal and his headed goal in the first game. Watching his play, demeanour and facial expressions (and obvious frustrations) his easy charm when interviewed also seems to conceal a fierce competitive streak. Perhaps we can see there a glimpse of the iron will of such as Zidane. It is needed. The beautiful game is a hard physical competition. We shall see. Even if you have the confidence, speed, strength and athleticism (rare in itself as a package) it cannot be put to use in this way without vision, the so called “football brain” the positional sense, the most important aptitude of the greatest players. This seems (looking at those who have it) to be partly a very rare gift (since they are few), being not only in the right place at the right time but also having some uncanny way knowing where other players are and perhaps an enhanced ability to predict where others will be. This is the "understanding" between players so hard to develop in international sides, systematically honed by the best coaches in league football. The hard chore of training is training the body and the mind. Hard work must also be a factor. How long does it take to make a genius?  10,000 hours according to Malcolm Gladwell (in Outliers), the time it takes in intense practice to achieve mastery of complex skills, and which might be of application across the whole spectrum of human activity, skills and achievement. Hence the importance of scouting, of identifying those who seem to have the necessary group of aptitudes and bringing them into the right environment to inculcate those skills when they are young, when both the body and the brain are developing. This stunning strike in just a few seconds is probably more than a decade in the making.
