While many perceive summer camps as spaces where campers learn and enjoy themselves, with counselors merely providing assistance, the reality often reveals a different dynamic. In numerous instances, it's the camp counselors who emerge from the experience having gained profound insights into seeing people and embracing differences, often learning more than the campers themselves. In "Failing to See What They See," Christian Long recounts his transformative experience as a camp counselor at Camp Capella for a boy named Uriah, whose physical and neurological challenges made everyday activities difficult. Uriah found freedom and joy in swimming at Phillips Lake, where his limitations vanished, transforming him into a graceful, boundless being. Long reflects on his initial failure to recognize the profound impact of the lake on Uriah’s well-being and his own role in supporting Uriah's passion. Over the years, Long realized that true education and caregiving involve seeing and nurturing the individual joys and needs of those in our care. He emphasizes the importance of creating spaces where children can thrive on their own terms and encourages educators to embrace and support the unique passions and perspectives of their students, as exemplified by Uriah’s love for the lake. Why make Camp Cherith a priority this summer? A parent was asked why they send their child to camp each summer and if they were going to be returning this year? Her response was;   "Camp is not an option - it's a priority. There is nothing throughout the year that can offer to our boys what camp does. I have noticed year after year, it is here that they gain more confidence, get to try things they otherwise couldn't, and are meeting great friends. Even more importantly it has been most significant for their spiritual growth."   At Cherith, it is our hope that every child gets a chance to have a Christian camping experience each summer and we want to do whatever possible to make that a reality in 2024.   Sure, some will still say: "camp is just a week away from home or a nice break from the kids for the parents." It is that, but it is so much more!   Recent research and feedback from parents have found that having a Christian camp experience has been recognized to: 1.  improve children's & youth's social skills 2.  see young people be willing to try new things 3.  help make children healthier by getting outdoors 4.  develop leadership skills and healthy independence in young people 5.  lead to greater likelihood of staying connected with their faith 6.  increase confidence and self-esteem 7.  serve as a great place of fun, friends and memories for a lifetime   SO!  If this is what a young person gets from a camp experience, it makes complete sense why it is a priority for a family to ensure their kids get this type of experience each year!  And this is why Cherith has existed for over 70 years - to be an affordable Christian camp in the beautiful Grey Bruce area providing a positive, safe and high quality life-changing experience for the next generation! I recently learned from a 947 show with Anele Mdoda, about the drowning of a child at a campsite in South Africa (not related to our operations) and want to sympathize with the family. I think that the incident that happened at Parktown Boys High School in January 2020(not related to our operations, should have brought about the need for intervention in any facility that works with young people but we still see not much has been done. We went about an developed a policy called "We care about the one", simply coming from a place where each child matters and we want every child to go back home safely after a camp. In recent years, it has become evident that many campsites (I will speak for South Africa, where I have more knowledge from our base of operations) are falling short when it comes to innovation in various aspects. Particularly referring to the safety of the campers. While camps play a valuable role in children's development beyond the classroom, it's important to continually assess and improve safety measures. As a player in the school educational tourism industry, it is important to recognize the significance of providing a safe environment for children without compromising the fun and educational aspects of the camp experience. Establishments should work actively on implementing safety protocols and measures to ensure that children can enjoy their time at camp while minimizing risks. The use of technology can allow campsites to get a better understanding of the campers before their arrival and use such data to adequately plan and be prepared for their arrival. Living in an age of data-driven decision-making, Campze built metrics to profile each learner before their arrival, this includes understanding their physical wellness, and importantly their confidence around water. But we do not only leave it there, we also ensure that there is adequate supervision at all times. Our goal is to strike a balance between adventure and safety by incorporating innovative approaches. By doing so, we aim to create an environment where children can learn and have fun, while parents have peace of mind knowing that their child's safety is our top priority. We understand the importance of ensuring the safety of every child attending our camps, and we are committed to continuously improving our safety practices to provide a secure and enriching experience for all participants. 🚀 Together, We Thrive: The Power of Community Support 🚀 📚 I recently read a fascinating study in PLOS Biology revealing that fish moving together in schools expend far less energy than when swimming alone. 🐟 Minnows swimming solo through a fast, rough current use up to five times more energy than those in groups! 🕊️ Birds demonstrate this too, flying in a “V” formation where the lead bird faces wind currents, easing the path for others. This principle applies to us as well. Our life journeys are smoother when we travel with companions, especially when the path gets rocky. Imagine facing homelessness as a single parent in our community. The challenges are immense: - A mother with a small child, living in a hotel room. - A parent of two preschoolers, with a broken-down car, unable to get to a vital job. 🛑 Facing these scenarios with minimal community support is incredibly tough. 🌟 Bridge of Hope 🌟 steps in here. Our Neighboring Volunteers answer Jesus’ call to “love your neighbor” by offering tangible and social support to families. They: - Stock kitchens for families moving into new homes. - Connect single moms with job opportunities. - Provide meals during busy times. - Send encouraging texts. These acts build meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships.
