Disabled people are further marginalised by the lack of accessibility to public & private spaces. Though access as a community issue needs to be tackled from a public infrastructural lens, we seek to understand it from an intersectional lens. Are the needs of disabled men and women different? Though disability quotas exist at workplaces & universities, are these spaces truly more accessible? Who is consulted when spaces are built? Antara Telang posed these questions to Apoorv Kulkarni, Anubha Singhal & Shrutilata Singh. To read more about what our panellists had to say, download the Purple People booklet https://bit.ly/4aj1H3w

On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we want to highlight inclusion and human rights for persons living with a rare disease. The challenges of persons living with a rare disease go far beyond health. Across the globe, our community faces multiple forms of discrimination and barriers to full participation in society. Children living with a rare disease struggle to be integrated into education systems and encounter barriers at every stage of schooling. Families and persons living with a rare disease face challenges maintaining decent work and have a greater risk of impoverishment due to the increased costs of care for a rare disease. Women experience gender inequality and stigma as persons living with a rare disease. And mothers often have a greater responsibility for caregiving within the home. #rise4rare #rarediseasediversity #raiseawareness #zebrastrong #HealthEquityinRARE #inclusion #humanrights #eliminatediscrimination

Inclusive Employment: How can adopters of the guidelines help in promoting inclusive employment inside their organisation? The fourth category of the #InclusiveDevelopmentGuidelines highlights relevant #BusinessActions through which adopters can support vulnerable groups and provide equal opportunities in the workplace. Whether it's employing more disabled people, ex-detainees and those from poorer communities or sourcing supplies from vulnerable groups, there are many ways to create an #InclusiveFuture for all. This approach not only helps bridge inequalities in employment and pay but also promotes diversity and rewards underprivileged-owned businesses when granting contracts. On June 28, 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a ruling in Grants Pass v. Johnson, allowing governments to prohibit and fine people experiencing #homelessness for camping and sleeping on public property, ruling that it does not violate the Eighth Amendment's prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. This decision comes amid a significant increase in homelessness in the United States, which rose by 12% last year to its highest reported level since data collection began in 2007. Currently, more than 650,000 people are estimated to be homeless, with rising rents, reduced pandemic assistance, and lack of access to mental health and addiction resources contributing to the crisis. Certain groups, including older adults, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of color, are disproportionately affected. The ruling is likely to have broad implications as cities nationwide grapple with the growing homelessness crisis. #LetsEndHomelessness #homelessruling #HomelessRights #HousingCrisis #HomelessPolicy #EndHomelessness #MentalHealthAwareness #lgbtqhomelessyouth #mentalhealthmatters #lackofaffordablehousing #affordablehousingforall #BrowardHousingSolutions

Encouraging BIPoC Trans, nonbinary, gender non-conforming, nonbinary folk to adopt healthy behaviors through health communications and campaigns is not enough. Social issues, such as, racism, transphopia in employment, housing, and health care need to be addressed. As well as, political issues, such as, the introduction and/or the passing of legislation that criminalizes homelessness, and limits or eliminates gender affirming care. The community also needs to be informed and connected to health and social services that are low cost to no cost and gender affirming. A system needs to be in place that includes, health communications/campaigns, addressing social/ political issues, and informing and connecting the community to health and social services that are affordable and gender affirming.

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. From the United Nations Population Fund: "To spotlight the advances and challenges, the theme of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia this year is: “No one left behind: Equality, freedom and justice for all.” Among the recent advances: Social and legal norms have shifted away from criminalizing LGBTQIA+ people and towards safeguarding their rights. Since 2019, 11 countries have legalized marriage equality. Since 2017, 13 countries have removed laws criminalizing LGBTQIA+ sexuality. Yet despite the progress, discrimination and stigma remain, leading to serious health disparities and other inequities. Dozens of countries still criminalize consensual same-sex relationships. In some places, LGBTQIA+ people could face the death penalty because of their identity, leaving them highly vulnerable to rights violations and with limited access to health services. And many political leaders are using polarizing policies and harmful rhetoric."
