Editorial: With gas and electricity bills set to go up this autumn, and the winter fuel allowance to be means-tested, the less well-off could be hit hard. Ministers must not raise the temperature with extravagant claims about the cost advantages of green energy

Labour’s new Government has outlined its legislative priorities in the first #KingsSpeech of this Parliament, with investment in energy infrastructure and a bill in support of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production included as priorities. As the representative of fuels manufacturers and suppliers, Fuels Industry UK is pleased to see the new Government addressing these issues. The fuels sector has essential roles in the nation’s energy security as well as in reducing the economy’s emissions on the transition to net zero. It's crucial right now to have coordinated and comprehensive policy making to attract investment to the UK and prevent a disorderly energy transition. https://lnkd.in/euazKwc8

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer will vow on Friday to “get working within months to build clean power across the United Kingdom” if his party wins the general election. At an event in Scotland – and joined by Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar – the prime ministerial hopeful will reiterate his plans for Great British Energy, first announced at the party’s conference in 2022. Headquartered north of the border, the new, publicly owned company will generate homegrown green energy up and down the country, with the party claiming it will help to “turn the page” on the cost of living crisis by driving down bills. But the Conservatives claimed it was a “vanity project” of former Labour leader – and now shadow energy security and net zero secretary – Ed Miliband, that will “leave taxpayers picking up the bill”. Politics live: Farage changes tune on Tory deal Sir Keir will outline how initial investments will be made within weeks, including in wind and solar projects, and as the firm grows, it will look into floating offshore wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage, in the hope of making Scotland “a world-leader in cutting edge technologies”. The party said the pledge would be paid for through a windfall tax on oil and gas companies. Sir Keir will say: “Family financial security depends on energy security. The pain and misery of the cost of living crisis was directly caused by the Tories’ failure to make Britain resilient, leaving us at the mercy of fossil fuel markets controlled by dictators like Putin. “It doesn’t have to be this way. Our clean power mission with Great British Energy will take back control of our destiny and invest in cheap, clean homegrown energy that we control. “We will turn the page on the cost of living crisis. The choice at this election is clear – higher bills and energy insecurity with the Conservatives, or lower bills and energy security with Labour.” Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player 0:44 Sir Keir Starmer first announced the policy in 2022 But Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Claire Coutinho claimed the project was both unfunded and would “turn off the taps to North Sea oil and gas”, risking 2,000 jobs. “By sticking to the Conservatives’ clear plan, energy bills are at the lowest point since 2022,” she added. “But we must go further. “That’s why we are taking bold action to guarantee the future of the energy price cap, as we back new nuclear power and offshore wind, keeping bills low and ensuring families are not lumbered with the cost of reaching net zero.” Image: Rishi Sunak and Claire Coutinho will argue the Tories are better placed to bring down energy bills. #Affordability issues are playing a big role in political debates around the world and that includes the cost of energy bills for consumers. Britain's energy regulator announced decrease in household bills today, putting a spotlight on the issue in the #UKelection2024. The #Conservatives immediately seized on the price drop, arguing it was further evidence that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was turning around the UK economy, even if critics insist it is more down to market forces than government policy amid on ongoing cost-of-living crunch. Should it win power, #Labour has pledged to create a publicly-owned clean energy company, Great British Energy, under a plan it claims would further reduce average energy bills. I’m a mother, wife, sister & daughter. I live and breathe my Western Sydney Community. It’s a privilege & honour to serve as their Member of Parliament. Local representation matters. This page is authorised by Dai Le.
#WednesdayWatch On Monday #QuestionTime I asked the Prime Minister: “Today is the start of your Government’s one-off $300 rebate that you claim would help all Australians with their energy bills. CPI is still around 4% according to the ABS. We know the rebate and tax cuts your Government announced will not be enough to pay for the increase in food, energy, petrol prices, rents and housing, which many families in Fowler are facing. Will you guarantee that struggling families in Western Sydney won’t go backwards with their cost of living from today, with your Government’s announcements?" As you can see from his answer, he gave no guarantees. The tax cuts only help Australians with jobs earning over $18,200 per year. Not pensioners, not the unemployed, not those on part-time and low pay. Like the $300 towards electricity cost increases, this does nothing to sort out the underlying problems of sky-high inflation and a stagnating economy where investment and productivity are down. Investors are scared to take risks in this climate. We know that this is not delivering for us every time we fill up our fuel tanks, get to the supermarket check-out, or unfold our latest power bill. What do you think of his answer? Will your life be significantly eased by these measures? Or are you struggling still? I know what I think: this is not delivering the positive change that we need in stimulating jobs, investment, and growth; these are what tackle cost-of-living issues. I will continue to look at areas where I can push the Government to do the right thing for the people and families of Fowler. #AusPol #DaiLeMPVoice #VoiceOfWesternSydney #CostOfLiving #CostofLivingCrisis #Energyprices #taxcuts #DaiLeMP

PM pushes plans to make Britain an ‘energy superpower’ and makes first official visit with new Welsh first minister, Eluned MorganGood morning and welcome to our rolling coverage of UK politics. My name is Tom Ambrose.Keir Starmer visits Wales to highlight Labour’s plans to make Britain an “energy superpower” and to address what he termed the “incoherent energy policy” his party inherited from the Tories. The prime minister and new first minister, Eluned Morgan, will travel to a site in West Wales today as part of their first official visit together. We have inherited an incoherent energy policy that has left homes up and down the country vulnerable to rocketing energy bills. The Labour government will invest “unprecedented levels of funding” in cycling and walking as a critical part of plans to improve health and inequality, the new secretary for transport has said. A national network of safe cycle routes could cut GP appointments “by hundreds of thousands, if not millions a year”, Louise Haigh said.Ministers have launched a pension credit publicity campaign to minimise the impact of the government’s decision to radically restrict winter fuel payments. The government hopes its pension credit awareness drive will help identify households not claiming the benefit and encourage pensioners to apply by 21 December, which is the last date this year for people to make a backdated claim for pension credit in order to receive the winter fuel payment.A former Conservative minister has called for an end to the demonisation of train drivers and said he understood why the new Labour government had “decided to cut a deal” with unions. Huw Merriman, who served as the rail minister for the entirety of Rishi Sunak’s premiership, apologised for failing to bring in workplace reforms and his inability to reach an agreement to end the strikes.Ministers have approved London City airport’s application to expand, in a decision that has disappointed climate campaigners. The airport submitted a proposal to increase capacity from 6.5 million to 9 million passengers a year by putting on more weekend and early morning flights. Local campaigners and Newham council opposed the move, arguing the air and noise pollution would affect people living nearby and that it could potentially increase carbon emissions. all in UK energy costs an early election dividing line: UK regulator Ofgem announced that from 1-Jul energy the average energy bill for a typical household will fall 7% to £1,568, reflecting the fall in wholesale energy costs. Announcement comes as Conservative leader Sunak seeks to claim credit and make falling gas and electricity bills an early dividing line in the election (London Times). The Tories also want to emphasize the difference between Labour's net zero policies and the impact on energy bills after Sunak watered down a series of green policies last year to ease household costs in the short-term. The Telegraph reported on Conservative election plans to make it easier for consumers to compare energy prices, though Labour argue it will not bring down bills. Labour want to make climate change a key focus of the election (Guardian). Starmer has pledged to create a new publicly owned energy company to invest in renewables and double the amount spent on home insulation. The Conservatives have argued it will lead to extra costs for households and might result in tax rises.

WARNING: the winter fuel allowance is being scrapped for some people. The allowance will now only be given to pensioners already claiming means tested benefits. That will have a huge impact on many people, at a time when energy prices are going up again, and when you use most of your annual usage. That will be worrying for a lot of people – but I can help bridge that gap. UW has some fantastic fixed rate deals that could save you a lot on energy, plus they offer great broadband and mobile packages too. Want to avoid paying more? Message me, and lets book a quick chat to secure your energy at a lower rate.
