Disrupting Perfumery: Exploring the Phenomena Reshaping the Industry On the occasion of World Perfume Day happening today, I would like to continue deep dive into singular Phenomena that are shaking up our Industry. Part 3/3: Cracking China’s Fast-Growing Fragrance Market As some of us can remember, despite its vast consumer base, China was not even among the top 10 perfume markets in 2010. Indeed, while Chinese consumers account for 20% of the world’s population, they only contributed 1% to value sales of fragrances. The perfume market in China has seen significant growth in recent years. Over the preceding five years, China’s perfume market expanded at a compound annual growth rate of 21.4 percent, 10 times the global market growth over the same period. Today, data from the research firm Euromonitor shows that China’s fragrance market is on track to reach $3.1 billion by 2025 – up from $2 billion in 2022. Despite this growth, the market remains undersaturated, with estimates suggesting a penetration rate between 5 and 10% (compared to 50% in the United States and 42% in Europe). Consequently, China is positioned to play a pivotal role in the global perfume industry’s future expansion … Perfume has been part of Chinese tradition since the 3rd century. However, this centuries-old heritage was erased during the Cultural Revolution, when the use of perfume was literally illegal. Today, a cultural renaissance is underway, led by younger consumers, particularly those aged 22 to 40 and mainly women (77.4%). Over half of Gen Z now wears perfume on a daily basis, exerting significant influence on market dynamics. This population of 250 million inhabitants values uniqueness and personalized experiences. They consider the social value behind the fragrance essential, as perfume plays an important role in promoting emotional connections. Niche perfumes already represent 36% of the market in China, compared to only 11% in the West. #AtelierCologne was among the first international niche scent labels to enter the market in 2017. Domestic perfume brands started emerging in 2019, offering unique and inimitable proposals using narratives that reflect and celebrate the rich local cultural heritage. Today, 33% of Chinese consumers express interest in fragrances featuring ingredients or elements rooted in Chinese culture… The battle to attract increasingly demanding and expert Chinese customers has only just begun… #FRAGRANCE #FRAGRANCEDAY #NICHE #WEARELOREAL #CHINA
