In this book review, Nick Bosio reflects on the importance of military history to any professional effort to master operational and strategic art. While focussed on US military engineering, Bosio observes that 'Clearing the Way: US Army Engineers in World War II' touches on three factors that any military professional needs to understand: the heritage of war-fighting skills and techniques; how different parts of the profession integrate to support the force as a whole; and what lessons can be learned from history to inform the resolution of contemporary military issues.

The Perils of Civilian Dictatorships: A Comparative Analysis with Military Dictatorships Civilian dictatorships often foster an environment of crony capitalism, where individuals close to the dictator benefit from preferential treatment, monopolies, and corrupt practices. This concentration of economic power in the hands of a few cronies stifles competition, inhibits economic growth, and inhibits the fair distribution of resources. https://lnkd.in/dfjejWHt

🌟 Trivia Answer Time! 🌟 The electrical telegraph, a game-changer during the American Civil War, transformed military communication forever. Did you know Samuel Morse devised Morse code for this device, revolutionizing long-distance communication? President Abraham Lincoln, our first "wired president," used this technology to write nearly 1,000 telegrams during his presidency, projecting presidential power in unprecedented ways. Lincoln even slept in the telegraph office on a cot during pivotal battles. Pictured are members of the U.S. Military Telegraph Corps. #ElectricalInnovations #TriviaTuesday #ExceedingExpectations

As I have not read the book his analysis is based on a minimal personal experience. Gary A. Roth makes a great point that the challenges as a whole cannot be explained by someone who has not experienced the recruiting field. You cannot compare the military accession and MEPS process to that of a civilian sector business because the expectations are completely different. The author highlights the mental aspect of his generation and expects the military to look past it like it is nothing but as suicide in the military is high among millennials it’s has risen over the years as Gen Z has come in and with Gen Z suicide on the rise without the stress of possible wartime scenarios only exasterbates the need for more scrutiny on enctrance physicals. Also, the military falls within the governmental budgetary regulations which DoD and Congress on a grander scale would need to enact and until GenZ get into that space there will be minimal movement on that front.

As I try to wrap my head around our military recruitment, this interview by Matthew Weiss, Marine Corps Intel Officer and Gen Zer talks about the challenges to attract recruits from his age group--well worth 6 min. While I don't agree with everything, he raises some great points on mindsets that the military could understand better and potentially shift. Looking forward to grabbing his book seeing more of his ideas - we need more junior leaders invested like this young officer. Love it! https://lnkd.in/gqBpENM9
