Adaptable – Someone who feels at home in a fast-paced environment and you’re able to change direction rapidly when priorities and deadlines shift. Exhaustively Meticulous – Unrelenting in their attention to detail, leaving nothing to chance while understanding what deserves immediate attention and what can wait. Mechanically Inclined – A naturally inquisitive tinkerer who dives head in, pulling from experience with how machines work when something needs to be fixed. The requirements: There are a few, but the MUST is previous experience as a Deco Operator/Adjuster/Maintainer or Chief in a can plant running a Rutherford or Concord decorator. We're running the first aTULC manufacturing plant in the western hemisphere and working with many of the most innovative beverage companies throughout North America to unlock entirely new categories for aluminum can packaging. The Thirty-One Hour Shift During my last plant manager job, I would arrive at the manufacturing plant by 7:00 AM. As one day began, it seemed like most others. We were dealing with the typical absenteeism issues and the various maintenance problems we would see at the start of the shift. Then, the call came from an angry customer to let us know they were experiencing a quality issue that would shut down their OEM customer’s operation. A day of fighting various small fires became a five-alarm one of an all-hands-on-deck response. As we assessed the concern, it became necessary to revise our manufacturing process. It required reworking a fixture and adding a welding process. The work began in the early afternoon and went through the night. By mid-morning the next day, we had the revised process in place and ready for review by the customer. Thankfully, the customer approved the change, and we were back in full production by mid-afternoon. After watching it for a couple of hours to ensure that things were working as expected, I left the plant thirty-one hours after arriving the previous day. Potentially surprising to some people, it was one of my favorite memories of my time in manufacturing. In part because resolving the issue in a compressed time frame was a significant challenge. Our team fully embraced resolving the concern in a tight time frame. Some people wilt under pressure, but our group rose to the occasion. One employee commented that it was easy to do so since I kept a calm sense of being for them as they urgently addressed the quality problem. Furthermore, a badge of honor comes from doing what many others could not accomplish when working for thirty-one hours straight.   What was the most extended block of time you worked in your career? #AutomotiveIndustry #LeanManufacturing #ManufacturingOperations #Manufacturing #HumanistManufacturing

It's 10:00 p.m. Your spray rig driver smacks into a power pole. Live wires with 70,000 volts surround the vehicle. Do you have a night time manager to handle the call to emergency services for medical requirements? A manager to coordinate with PG&E to locate the accident scene? A manager to work with and follow up with law enforcement? Accident protocols are important too. Having a competent safety/security person on call for such occasions allows the production managers to focus on what they do best - grow & harvest fruit.

When equipment goes down, the employees you’re paying to operate the equipment essentially become useless. This results in wasted labor costs. So not only are you not making money, but you’re also paying people for a lack of. It’s not just the employees who are directly responsible for the piece of equipment, though. When there’s a major breakdown, you likely call for all hands on deck. This causes a chain reaction effect where other areas of the business to become strained – such as customer service. This is why we try to schedule routine visits with customers and go over the equipment with the team.
