An estimated 153 million people will be living with dementia by 2050, according to current projections. This is a significant increase from the 57 million in 2019. As life expectancies improve, the number of people living with dementia worldwide continues to rise 📈 The 2024 report of the Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention, and care adds compelling new evidence that untreated vision loss and high LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol are risk factors for dementia. Around 45% of dementia cases are potentially preventable by addressing 14 modifiable risk factors, the Commission suggests. The addition of untreated vision loss and high LDL #cholesterol as newly identified #risk factors is a valuable contribution to our understanding. It may also be helpful for future research to explore the potential impact of factors such as the illicit use of #marijuana and #pesticide exposure in food, which could further enrich our preventative strategies.

With nearly 1/2 of global cases being reduced when access to health promotion services increases, a team of us are developing a free individualized app that will guide people in their dementia health journey. The first iteration will be released November 2024 at Gerontological Society of America.
