🌂 *Tomorrow: Join Us for Blue Umbrella Day 2024* 🌂 The countdown is on! In just one day, we unite for #BlueUmbrellaDay 2024, a global call to action to protect boys from sexual violence. This year, voices from 25 countries are joining forces to spread this crucial message. Why We Need Your Engagement: Essential Insights Data Deficiency: A glaring lack of global data on male sexual abuse contributes to the issue being massively denied and trivialized. (UNICEF 2017 & 2014; Miller et al. 2018; Richter et al. 2018 citing Spiegel 2013). Underreporting: Boys are less likely to report experiences of sexual violence than girls, and their experiences are often not recognized as abusive or harmful. (Caring for Boys, 2018, Easton 2013, UBS Optimus Foundation 2016; Jewkes et al. 2015) Lack of Specialised Services: Specialised support services for male survivors are scarce, with many child support systems being primarily designed for female survivors.(Out of the Shadows Index Report 2022) Legal Disparities: While 93% of countries criminalize sexual acts between adults and female minors, only 82% have similar prohibitions for male minors (Out of the Shadows Index Report 2022). Vulnerability of Adolescents: The majority of boys encounter sexual violence in their adolescent years, specifically between 14 and 19 years old. (WHO 2020; Andersson & Ho-Foster 2008; Richter 2018) You can make a difference! Whether you’re an individual or an organization, there are many ways to get involved: Host an event in your community Use the hashtag #BlueUmbrellaDay in your social media posts Kickstart a fundraiser to support the cause Download the participation pack to learn more and get started Visit https://lnkd.in/gu7iS5PR for all the resources you need to join the movement. During #BlackHistoryMonth, it's imperative to address the reality of statistics like these. While sexual abuse does impact children from all communities, it doesn't negate the fact that children of color face TWICE the risk as their white peers. It takes all of us to protect the most vulnerable among us. Will you help us make the world a safer place for them to grow up? Give today: https://lnkd.in/gmE4guR
