Today and every day, we honor Juneteenth—a celebration of freedom, resilience, and progress towards a more just society. Let's reflect, unite, and amplify Black voices in our pursuit of equality. At Lockwood, we firmly believe in the importance of diversity, inclusivity, and creating a workplace that fosters respect and understanding for all. Juneteenth provides us with an opportunity to reflect on our shared commitment to these values and to honor the contributions of Black individuals not only in our organization but also in the broader medical communications field. Beyond celebrating this milestone, it's important to acknowledge the gaps that remain, particularly in health care. Together, we can work towards promoting equitable access to health care, where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy life. #Juneteenth

Juneteenth is not just Black history; it is American history. It is a celebration of freedom, opportunity, equity, and access. We honor #Juneteenth not only through recognition but also as an opportunity to learn and grow as a company. This week, our Black Employee Network Employee Resource Group will host a panel discussion, Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and Resilience, for the entire firm exploring the history and lasting impact of Juneteenth while also addressing the current landscape of diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition to honoring and celebrating the remarkable strides and achievements of the Black community, we will provide resources for community members and allies who want to learn more and take action to promote positive change and progress. We encourage everyone to learn more about Juneteenth's significance, the complex history of the struggles faced by the Black community, and how to get involved in progressing equality in and outside the workplace.

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we must also acknowledge the invisible chains that still bind our country due to systemic racism. The legacy of slavery continues to impact the lives of Black Americans today, from disproportionately high rates of incarceration to limited access to quality education and opportunities. We must all commit to being actively anti-racist and dismantling the systems that uphold white supremacy. This means advocating for policies that promote equity and justice, supporting Black-owned businesses, and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. As a professional in the corporate world, I recognize the importance of creating inclusive workplaces where all employees feel seen, heard, and valued. We must actively work to dismantle the barriers that prevent Black professionals from advancing in their careers and ensure that everyone has access to the same opportunities for success. Let us use this day of celebration as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to create a truly equal and just society. We must continue to educate others, have difficult conversations, and take action.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day of liberation and reflection. On June 19, 1865, over 250,000 enslaved Black Americans in Texas finally learned they were free—more than two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. While Juneteenth marks the end of slavery, it's important that we remember and acknowledge that the journey to freedom was long, and the fight for equality and equity continues today. A more equitable and equal society is possible through our combined efforts. By educating yourself and sharing what you learn, advocating for change, engaging with local organizations focused on social justice and helping amplify those voices. Engage with organization like the Running Industry Diversity Coalition, who are actively dismantling barriers and expanding black-ownership in the running industry. What are some other organizations that deserve our attention for their work in creating a more equitable world?

This Juneteenth, I am taking time to learn! I am celebrating the day as a symbol of a significant milestone in American history and considering what can be done to continue to improve our country's legacy. Reading the Harvard Business Review article “How Your Organization Can Recognize Juneteenth” was a joy and such a helpful resource for information. Here are my key takeaways on how we can honor Juneteenth in the workplace: Educate and Reflect: Share the history of Juneteenth and foster open conversations within teams. Promote Equity: Use this day to evaluate and strengthen DEI initiatives, supporting Black professionals and building partnerships with HBCUs. Active Commemoration: Engage in learning activities and support Black-owned businesses. Celebrate Intersectionality: Recognize and celebrate the diverse identities within our workplace to create an inclusive environment for all. By making Juneteenth a day of education and action, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable workplace.
