Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend a profound discussion hosted by Germany Trade & Invest, ZVEI e. V. & OAV - German Asia-Pacific Business Association, focusing on the semiconductor industry and markets in the Asia-Pacific region. Here are my key takeaways: 👉 Strategic Focus on Asia-Pacific: The Asia-Pacific region remains a thriving hub for semiconductor growth. The market dynamics are rapidly evolving, offering both significant challenges and opportunities. 👉 Government Strategies and Funding: Experts from the region highlighted how local governments are aggressively positioning themselves to capture a larger share of the semiconductor market. As new players like India, Vietnam, and the Philippines enter the scene, competition is set to become even more intense. 👉 The Need for Europe to Act Swiftly: As the competitive landscape sharpens, Europe needs to take quick and decisive action. Ceating further incentives for investments will be crucial to maintain a competitive edge. The European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA) urges a Chips Act 2.0 — an essential step at this time. A big thank you for the excellent organization and these insights, and special thanks to Anna-Lena Schütte from Infineon, and Dr. Svend Buhl from NXP Semiconductors for their valuable industry perspectives.

This week, 720 Members of the European Parliament are gathering in Strasbourg 🇫🇷 for the first plenary session of the European Parliament. This marks the beginning of their earnest work in addressing key issues facing Europe today. As the European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA), we believe this is a critical moment for the creation of an EP Intergroup working on #Semiconductors. Such an Intergroup would serve as a dedicated platform for regular exchanges between MEPs, industry experts, and stakeholders. It would foster the development of a sustainable knowledge base, ensuring that Europe remains at the forefront of the global semiconductor industry. #Semiconductors are vital to Europe's technological and economic future. Establishing a structured forum within the European Parliament can significantly enhance our collective ability to navigate the challenges and opportunities in this sector. Let's work together to build a stronger, more resilient semiconductor ecosystem in Europe. #EuropeanParliament #Innovation

✅ ICOS-International Cooperation On Semiconductors General Assembly in Brussels in the snow! This three day internal workshop is the perfect opportunity to gather all the consortium members and organise our 2024 General Assembly. 🚀 One year after the launch of the project, this moment was taken for a retrospective of the past months, highlighting the progresses and planning the next steps. 🔹 An economic and landscape analysis was conducted, allowing to better assess the international situation in the field of semiconductors. We had already shared some insights about it at our last international workshop in September. 🔹 A more detailed scanning and foresight analysis of the actual technologies and emerging technologies, together with a mapping of the target countries (India, Japan, Taiwan, South-Korea, the US, Singapore...) and the European continent gave us a broader view of the challenges and needs in the field, paving the way for a strengthened international cooperation. We have much more to say on semiconductors and hope to share a lot with all interested individuals at our next workshop, planned in May in Greece! Giorgos Fagas, Alessandro Cresti, Peter Ramm, Nicolas Gouze, Paolo Motto Ros, Danilo Demarchi,Fabrice Graignic, Melanie Hentsche, Sophie Cordeiro, Jyrki Kiihamäki, Holger Schmidt, Nadine Collaert, Francis Balestra, Patrick COGEZ, Irina Ionica, Olivier Faynot, Mathilde Berric, Wim Bogaerts, Léo Saint-Martin, Cédric LEBON, Mattias Versuyft, Pascale CAULIER, Pascal Xavier, Romuald B. Reflecting on the First Annual Meeting of the European Semiconductor Regions Alliance (ESRA) On May 29, 2024, top representatives from the European Semiconductor Regions Alliance gathered in Dresden for their inaugural annual meeting. The alliance, founded in September 2023 on the initiative of the Free State of Saxony, now proudly includes 31 regions with the recent addition of the Norte region from Portugal. At this meeting, a joint position paper was adopted, emphasizing the need for long-term support for the European semiconductor industry, strengthening R&D, and creating robust conditions across the entire value chain. A significant focus was placed on closer cooperation in vocational education and training to effectively address the shortage of skilled workers. Michael Kretschmer Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony and Chairman of ESRA, expressed his optimism: "ESRA provides a powerful platform for influence and collaboration, essential for enhancing Europe’s technological sovereignty and competitiveness." Alberto Cirio, President of the Piedmont Region and Co-Chair of ESRA, highlighted the benefits of collaboration: "Joining ESRA strengthens our regional specializations and investments, offering advantages for all of Europe." With around 100 participants, the first meeting was a resounding success and marked a significant step towards a united and competitive European semiconductor landscape.
