Random musings based on back-to-back sales calls, one with a startup, and another with an enterprise - With rapid advancements in transcription, large language models, and text-to-speech technologies (fuelled significantly by open-source initiatives), most companies have started to (or will soon start to) find ways to automate routine conversations and tasks that have traditionally required humans to carry out. Interestingly, the drive towards automation is motivated by different needs depending on the size of the company. Startups and younger companies are focused on scaleability. A 10x increase in customer base traditionally requires 10x the human effort (incl. customer service, lead qualification/upselling, relationship management etc.). Automation offers a path to seamless scalability, eliminating the substantial expenditure of resources (onboarding, training, managing a team) each time the company scales. The key considerations here are the speed and ease of developing agents capable of performing the required tasks. On the other hand, larger enterprises have already built sizable teams for customer interactions and hence view voice AI as a means to cut costs and optimize team bandwidth for other tasks. Here, the focus is on the per-conversation cost-effectiveness of operating an automated agent versus maintaining extensive customer service teams.
