I developed the concept for this piece shortly before my second dissertation recital; it combines improvisation and a bit of arranging. I did not initially intend for the composition to be a political statement, however, my choices of melodic themes that include The Star Spangled Banner and Lift Every Voice and Sing brought to mind a reflection of the current sociopolitical climate of not only the United States, but the entire world. The elements of the unknown led me to the title: We Shall See. The initial purpose of the title was predicated on the open improvisation format; I had no idea what direction it would take. The title now holds even more relevance and significance in these uncertain times. The ideas of love vs. hate , magnanimity vs. greed, tolerance vs. bigotry, and the question of what will happen next is front and center in all of our minds so, We Shall See. Is public art a waste of money or a joy to share? Public art divides opinion. Some say it's frivolous, others see it as a cultural treasure. Does it need a function to be valuable, or is its mere existence enough? I believe public art enriches our community. It sparks conversations, even when it's controversial. Whether you love or loathe it, it gets people talking. What's your take? Are you excited to see the Mirror Man back in Loch Earn? Share your thoughts below. https://lnkd.in/e64vj2HK

BRINGING RESEARCH TO LIFE: A CREATIVE TWIST I'm always looking for creative ways to bring research to life. I want research to be not just informative but unforgettable. For research to be impactful, audiences need to FEEL something. It's not enough for findings to be relevant; they need to grab you, make you feel the urgency, the surprise, and spark that aha! moment. This is super challenging with historical research. How do we make people care about what seems like ancient history, buried in dusty archives? That's why I got excited when I read Anna Deavere Smith's play, "This Ghost of Slavery," in The Atlantic. It was a lightbulb moment. I've never seen someone use such an imaginative approach to bring research to life—weaving old and new transcripts from actual interviews into characters' dialogue in a story set in contemporary America. Suddenly, those 1890s Maryland diaries aren't just old documents--"the echoes of history reverberate loudly, revealing the power of historical trauma to shape behavior in the present day." Check out the entire November 2023 issue of The Atlantic for more. It's a deep dive into the impact of Reconstruction and its backlash, shedding light on current societal issues. Perfect timing as we wrap up Black History Month. https://lnkd.in/gyJxdzhP Let's keep pushing the boundaries of how we present research. If we can make history leap off the page, imagine what else we can do. #ResearchInnovation #HistoricalInsights #CreativeStorytelling #EngagingHistory #BlackHistoryMonth #ThoughtLeadership #CulturalImpact #HistoryReimagined
