Our 2024 Annual Digital Lecture, 'Turning over a new leaf: AI ethics in/through the archives', is being delivered by Dr Eleanor Drage and Kerry McInerney, PhD Join us to explore how feminist and anti-racist ideas are shaking up AI regulation and governance, how archives play a key role in AI ethics, and why this all matters for research. Both Dr Drage and Dr McInerney (née Mackereth) are Senior Research Fellows at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence at the University of Cambridge, and together they co-host The Good Robot podcast on feminism, gender, and technology 🤖 The Annual Digital Lecture offers the opportunity to hear from leading speakers about a topic related to digital research. To accompany the Lecture and showcase some of the exciting digital research happening at The National Archives, we currently have a poster display in the Auditorium area at our site in Kew. 🗓️ Wednesday 27 November, 11:00-12:15 GMT. 📢 We are most fortunate to have Prof David Duvenaud give the opening "micro-level" keynote on Ethics & Society Day of our Summit (Boston, Dec 4-6th): http://algopreneurship.ai David is a Professor at University of Toronto and Vector Institute, having just returned back from a sabbatical at Anthropic. After & alongside a very successful research program on deep probabilistic models, David has begun to explore the new and extremely important world of AGI governance. Ethics & Society Day has three sections: micro (researcher-level), meso (organization-level), and macro (societal). We've never done this before, and are really interested to try it out. In particular, to make progress within each level, between them, and also with the researchers and attendees in Algorithms Day and Applications Day. (Thanks Skyler Wang for the structure!) If you're into AI Ethics and live in the area, come and join the debate on Dec 5th! http://algopreneurship.ai Hosted by Æthos & Thinking About Thinking, Inc

"AI Ethics is a core component of our new Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, essential for shaping responsible AI practitioners. As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms our world, emphasizing ethical considerations alongside technical skills, we prepare our graduates to lead in creating AI systems that are not only powerful, but also fair, transparent, and beneficial to humanity. When talking about AI fairness and ethics, the debate often tends to focus on the abstract principles but there are some very practical considerations that make LLMs more or less viable for specific use cases in research. For example we've been exploring ways of using LLMs in Public Opinion Research and this paper from Sungkyunkwan University and Hamad Bin Khalifa University is super interesting. The study shows how if you look at LLMs outputs, they tend to match public opinion from polling when analysing audiences in aggregate. But run an analysis of any subgroup and you realise that the LLM outputs start degrading away from the polled outputs, particularly when the subgroup is defined by race, gender, politics and the economy. Granted this was tested on GPT 3.5 Turbo so things might have changed with recent upgrades, but the point is yes you can glean insights on public opinion from an LLM in aggregate but the moment you start looking at subgroups, about 60% of your results are gonna skew away from reality due to multiple forms of bias in the data. What system requirements are crucial for its responsible development and use? How can research-based theater effectively engage a broader audience in the inquiry of this investigation? MoralPLai: A Creative Method for Communicating and Co-shaping AI Ethics Research is our new project that implements a creative approach to conducting, educating, and communicating AI ethics research through the lens of the arts (i.e., research-based theater). "Our goal is to demystify AI ethics and scientific research, making it more accessible and engaging for everyone. Through the creative medium of research-based theater, we aim to promote mutual knowledge exchange and collaboration in examining the societal implications and development of specific AI systems. We look forward to seeing the outcomes of this project and are excited to work with our international partners at the University of Notre Dame and metaLAB (at) Harvard.” Franziska Poszler, IEAI Researcher For more information about the project, team and objectives, visit our dedicated webpage and stay tuned for upcoming updates. ➡️https://lnkd.in/eEiGwrty Carys Kresny Christoph Lütge S.
