Hey LinkedIn 😎 I don't post enough here, but figured this is a perfect opportunity! To the Type A observer, my career probably looks like an unfocused pursuit of shiny desires without a sustained dedication to a singular industry. To that Type A observer: Kudos—you ain't wrong. But there's a thread-through if you dig deeper. My professional career has been defined by pivotal moments in my personal, professional, and political life. Sometimes it's not clear whether to stay the path; other times, continuing is the only path. Sometimes all empirical evidence is shouting "Zig, dammit!" And sometimes the universe cackles and sprinkles a ten ton Zag. Sometimes you spend a 9 month season in black, busted open Air Force 1's, bussing tables and waking up every morning on a deflated air mattress on hardwood floors in a Harlem apartment, crafting a songwriting syllabus with *zero* concrete plans of where or how to implement it, and definitely zero knowledge that months later you'd be selected to be a teaching artist fellow at Columbia University as a result of that same syllabus. Sometimes you get selected to be a teaching artist fellow on the exact same day that you find out you're going to be a travel host for Rolling Stone magazine. To the Type A observer, I clearly need to "pick a lane." Stay ten toes down. Keep my eye on the prize. But the Type B observer probably understands the prize: I'm a maker, a sharer, and a collaborator. The "prize" has always been a robust expression of my ideas, packaged professionally at the highest level available to me. Songwriting as a craft allows me to say what is true, to present it with a goal of greatness, and to share it with the world alongside generous collaborators. I'm an award winning copywriter because it allows me to say what is true, to present it with a goal of greatness, and to share it alongside generous collaborators. I'm a voice actor, script writer, songwriting school founder, recording artist, and on camera presenter because they're all ways to express what is true, present it with a goal of greatness, and share with the world alongside generous collaborators. To my Type A readers: I have so much to learn from you. I admire your focus toward difficult ends. I deeply respect your upholding of standards and boundaries. In the right conditions, we make an unstoppable team. Next week I’ll be "Zagging", and will be honored to represent Greensboro, NC's creative class at the Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Celebration at Tanger Center, where I'll be encouraging collaboration between our business and creative classes. Script writing, on camera presenting, voice acting, live performing—and now—public speaking: it's been a joyous amalgamation of long-running storylines with a full circle hometown twist on the city's best stage.
