Mangrove forests are critical in our fight against climate change. They can store four to ten times more carbon per hectare as terrestrial forests, but sadly in many regions they are being lost 3-4 times faster than terrestrial forests. Their locations along the fringes of land and sea can make them difficult to measure by hand, and thus the need for effective remote sensing technologies and methods are critical for gathering more accurate information on these ecosystems to better inform decisions on coastal land use and restoration. A new manual from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in the Caribbean, aims to do just that! This manual helps stakeholders make the best decisions on which remote sensing methods are best for mapping and monitoring different kinds of mangroves based on project needs and budgets. Thus, allowing for enhanced management and conservation of these critical ecosystems. World Environment Day 5 June This year's theme focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience. Our land. Our future. #GenerationRestoration "We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land." United Nations Environment Programme. Fun Facts: Did you know? • Every five seconds, the equivalent of one football pitch of soil is eroded. Yet, it takes 1,000 years to generate 3 centimetres of topsoil. • Trees in urban areas can cool the air by up to 5°C, reducing air conditioning needs by 25%. • Lakes, rivers and wetlands hold 20–30% of global carbon despite occupying only 5–8% of its land surface. • Despite what the name suggests, drylands are home to more than a quarter of the world's forests, a third of global biodiversity hotspots and provide critical migration points for birds. • Almost 60% of all species live in soil, making land the planet’s most biodiverse habitat. • Deserts cover more than one-fifth of the Earth's land area and are found on every continent. #GenerationRestoration #WorldEnvironmentDay

OCEAN OPTIMISM ✨ Wetland conservation 🌳🌱 found to be the most effective ocean-based climate solution 🌊. In order to tackle climate change, we must better protect the ocean. But concrete action remains slow... A research team 👩🏻🔬, led by Imperial College, assessed a range of ocean conservation approaches to determine which areas should be considered priorities. Criteria included biodiversity, pollution, carbon impact, readiness level, costs, trade-offs, and scalability. Using the assessment framework, wetland conservation 🌳 proved to be the most crucial ocean-based climate solution currently available. Wetlands, such as mangroves, seagrass, and saltmarsh provide not only carbon storage, but also coastal protection 🌊 - which is critical as sea levels rise. 🎥 Marcelo Johan Ogata / Ocean Image Bank Follow The Marine Diaries for more #OceanOptimism #Wetlands #Wetland #Conservation #ClimateAction #ClimateCrisis #ClimateChange #Mangroves #Seagrass #Saltmarsh #TidalMarsh #Marshlands

Keeping track of environmental changes is essential to mitigate risks, better address climate change, and safeguard our future. This World Environment Day, let’s take a look at how using location intelligence can help us understand what's happening to our planet: 1. Geographic information system (GIS) can analyze satellite imagery to monitor deforestation and protect valuable ecosystems. 2. Tracking water levels in rivers, lakes, and groundwater sources allow us to manage water resources more effectively and identify areas with water scarcity. 3. Regularly analyzing land use and/or land cover patterns allows us to identify trends like urbanization or agricultural expansion, which then enables us to come up with informed planning and conservation efforts. 4. Location intelligence helps us visualize changes in temperature, precipitation patterns, and sea levels, which are crucial data for understanding the impacts of climate change. 5. We can track changes in biodiversity and identify areas critical for conservation by mapping the distribution of plant and animal species. #GIS #EnvironmentalMonitoring #EarthScience #ProtectOurPlanet #WorldEnvironmentDay

Today it is World Wetlands Day - celebrated each year on 2 February since 1997 to raise awareness about wetlands. Sadly, we are losing the world’s wetlands three times faster than forests and yet they are such an important part of our ecosystem. They contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, world economies and more. We have captured some beautiful aerial images of the UK’s wetlands over the years, here’s one of the Norfolk Broads – aerial photography overlaid with normalised difference water index (NDWI). Datasets of this kind are an ideal tool when monitoring changes related to water content in water bodies, something that is crucial as we seek to protect and maintain our UK wetlands. The Vital Role of Coastal Ecosystems in the Face of Climate Change Coastal ecosystems play a crucial role in mitigating and adapting to climate change, serving as vital buffers against its impacts. These diverse habitats, including mangroves, salt marshes, and coral reefs, provide essential services such as coastal protection, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. As climate change intensifies, these ecosystems face increasing threats from rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and extreme weather events, jeopardizing their ability to continue providing these critical functions. Mangroves, for instance, act as natural barriers against storm surges and coastal erosion, shielding coastal communities and infrastructure from the devastating impacts of hurricanes and tsunamis. Similarly, salt marshes and […] #ClimateChange #coastalecosystems >>>>> Full article in the link below

As an ocean abolitionist, I utilize my voice, passion, keen listening skills, ability to tell stories, and collect qualitative data to gain support for ocean conSERVEation. At the Summit on Ocean Biodiversity spearheaded by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Natural History, I was honored to be a voice for my people discussing the impact of climate change on Frontline communities. Erasure No More! Frontline communities, like African American/Gullah Geechee communities in the Southeast U.S., bear the brunt of climate change and experience its effects more keenly. They live on the edge of land and sea, and therefore what seems unreal to others --sea level rise, flood..ing, coastal erosion, massive storm surges, salt water intrusion of farms and equipment, infrastructure, wells, and aquifers, loss of species and degradation of habitats--- is a reality for those of us who live where land meets massive ocean. "Climate refugee" is a reality when there is a huge storm system in coastal regions. Instead of development of new high-priced, incompatible communities, there needs to be development of floodproof infrastructure that will protect all people and not just those who live in gated communities in elevated homes. #summitonoceanbiodiversity #oceanbiodiversity #oceanabolitionist #climateandocean #frontlinecommunities https://lnkd.in/dPfK77vV
