In a recent article from The Virginian-Pilot, our State Director Bettina Ring discusses the $47.2 million that TNC Virginia will receive from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant to advance nature-based solutions and reduce carbon emissions across the state. This funding is part of a $421 million multi-state coalition grant that also includes our TNC chapters in Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina. Altogether, the full grant is the largest ever on record from the EPA for natural climate solutions! Bettina shares some of the ways Virginia is seeing the impacts of climate change—from severe storms to flooding to droughts—and how the grant will help us leverage the power of nature to solve these challenges. "Knowing that we can truly use natural resources as a solution to [climate issues] is just huge. The nice thing about those solutions is it supports not only protecting the environment, but it supports the local economy and supports local communities as that social aspect." Check out the full story to learn more about how the funding will be used in Virginia and how the multi-state coalition secured this gift: https://nature.ly/3SIRyGq

A coalition of four mid-Atlantic states, The Nature Conservancy, and Duke University has received a historic $421M federal grant to reduce carbon emissions through nature-based projects. https://lnkd.in/gBfg8tNM Nicholas Institute experts Lydia Olander and Katie Warnell will lead reporting on the progress of the 21 projects, which will conserve or restore more than 200,000 acres of coastal habitats, forests and farmland in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the funding through its Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program, which was created under the federal Inflation Reduction Act. 📢 Breaking News! TNC is thrilled to announce that we will receive a $200 million grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the next 5 years to advance nature-based solutions and reduce carbon emissions across Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina! 🎉 This funding is part of a $421 million grant from the EPA — the largest ever for natural climate solutions! The grant will enable TNC to significantly expand its efforts, improving forest management on over 67,650 acres in the Appalachians, restoring 33,000 acres of peatlands, protecting 10,500 acres of land, and restoring 150 acres of tidal wetlands – helping us to reduce wildfire and flood risks and to achieve our 2030 goals for nature and the environment. TNC Virginia will receive $47.2 million to conserve forests and improve forest management across the Appalachians and Southeastern Virginia, as well as restore tidal wetlands in Eastern Virginia, all of which will involve collaborating across state borders to maximize the climate benefits. Inspiring and amazing news! The largest ever ($200 million!!) natural climate solutions grant will support a wide range of conservation, restoration, and improved land management activities across VA, MD, NC, and SC. This funding is made possible through the Inflation Reduction Act and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program. My takeaways: 1) The inflation reduction act championed by the Biden/Harris administration is going to have a HUGE positive impact for people and the environment for generations to come. 2) Purpose driven coalitions and visionary leadership can deliver BIG WINS at scale. 3) Elections matter. This historic investment was only made possible because of voters electing leaders that were willing to go big. 4) Science-based advocacy, outreach and education from coalitions like US Nature4Climate and others have put #naturalclimatesolutions on the map, front and center where they belong.

Coastal ecosystems serve as a buffer that can limit the impacts of erosion, flooding, and storms--all while storing carbon and providing habitat for marine wildlife and fisheries. Thanks to funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a new $421 million Climate Pollution Reduction Grant to the Atlantic Conservation Commission that will help protect and restore coastal, peatland, and forest lands across North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia. The ocean and coastal funding secured in the Inflation Reduction Act was unprecedented, but we are learning that it's not coming close to meeting the HUGE demand for these kinds of projects. EPA received 300 applications from entities from across the country and requested a total of nearly $33 billion in funding. The total CPRG program=~$5 billion. Congress must take note: to adapt and thrive in a changing climate, we need sustained investments for our ocean & coasts. #OceanClimateAction https://lnkd.in/e_cDdyjD

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) just announced that it will receive $200 million toward nature-based solutions, supporting significant reductions of carbon emissions across four states: Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Projects will focus on improved forest management, peatland restoration and tidal wetland enhancement, which are three areas identified as having the highest potential greenhouse gas benefits. This grant is part of a historic $421 million award from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) Program — established as part of the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022 — that will fund both state-led and TNC-led projects. Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and TNC Chapters within those states joined together in forming the Atlantic Conservation Coalition to apply for the funding package, which now stands as the largest-ever on record for natural climate solutions. https://lnkd.in/gardEaz8 The Nature Conservancy in Virginia #conservation #IRA

On this World Environment Day, we join millions worldwide in recognizing the importance of environmental conservation. Cohance is dedicated to environmental stewardship and pledges to implement eco-friendly practices at work and in our daily lives. Since its establishment by the United Nations in 1973, this day has been a call to action for protecting our planet. This year's theme, "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience," resonates deeply with our shared responsibility to restore degraded land and combat drought. With up to 40% of the world's land degraded and the number of drought-affected populations set to rise by 2050, immediate action is vital. Let's unite for "Environmental Protection." Every effort counts, from reducing waste to conserving resources. Together, we can ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. #Cohance #WorldEnvironmentDay #Sustainability #LandRestoration #Desertification #DroughtResilience #EnvironmentalProtection #ClimateAction

Great examples of states harnessing coastal wetlands to help meet the climate challenge. In Texas, we’re protecting and retoring wetlands, seagrass, oyster reefs, prairies and other habitats. Kudos to the states in this article and to the many organizations in Texas doing this important work. We need to amplify more nature based solutions.
