  • Did you know that each fall, millions of birds and butterflies travel through Virginia on their incredible migration journeys? 🦋🐦 Many species, including warblers, raptors, and Monarch butterflies migrate at night and rely on natural light cues. By turning off your lights, you can help ensure a safer journey for these amazing creatures. Let’s make Virginia a welcoming stopover for our migrating friends! How you can help: 1. Turn off non-essential lights: Especially between dusk and dawn. This simple action can make a huge difference! Artificial lights can disorient migrating species, leading to exhaustion or collisions. 2. Close curtains and blinds: Prevent indoor lights from spilling outside. 3. Spread the word: Encourage your friends and neighbors to join in! When to Act: Peak migration is already underway! Lasting through mid-October, it is a critical time for many species passing through Virginia. Photo: K Pennington/TNC Photo Contest 2019

  • Bill Owen is a TNC Virginia trustee with many interests and talents. While a lifelong musician, Bill is also the owner of a farm and the Raccoon Creek Pinelands in Southeastern Virginia. His passion for conservation has led him to plant more longleaf pine on his property than anywhere else in the state. To get around his farm and growing longleaf forest, Bill bought an electric Ford Lightning pickup truck, and he sings its praises as "clean, quiet and fast" — the perfect vehicle for his needs and for helping to reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy. Watch the video to see Bill and his beloved truck in action, and to hear about how it once helped a tour bus out of a sticky situation.

  • Our hearts and thoughts are with the dedicated first responders, impacted communities and their families, partners, and colleagues and all others impacted by Hurricane Helene over the past several days. In Virginia, we are grateful for the TNC staff, community members, and many volunteers who are on the ground and providing support in the southwest portion of the state that was most heavily impacted. If you have the means to support the affected communities, please consider donating to the United Way of Southwest Virginia’s 2024 SWVA Regional Disaster Relief Fund: https://lnkd.in/ePCMbcjh At our Taste of Virginia Tap Takeover event tonight in Abingdon at Sweetbay Brewing Company, they will be accepting donations to support relief efforts. ⚠️ When traveling through this area, it's important to follow safety recommendations from local law enforcement.

Last week, TNC joined our partners from Virginia Tech and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and two volunteers to crawl the bottom of the Clinch River in snorkels and wetsuits for an annual mussel sampling event called Musselrama! The Clinch River is an ecological marvel in southwest Virginia, housing around 50 species of freshwater mussels, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. Musselrama is a part of long-term qualitative monitoring efforts aimed at assessing the presence of key mussel species. Over 4 days of sampling, we were thrilled to encounter 21 different species of mussels! Photos: Nick Proctor/TNC
