Humanity's survival is still within our grasp, but it requires #urgent, #radical action. Sir David King, Chair of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group, emphasises the #critical steps we must take: #reduce #emissions, #remove #greenhousegases, #repair #ecosystems, and build #resilience — the four Rs that can save us. The Arctic Circle is #heating up four times #faster than the #global average, and #sea #ice #loss in #Greenland and #Antarctica is #accelerating. In 2023, we saw unprecedented #wildfires and catastrophic #floods. #Innovative projects like creating bright #whitecloud cover over the #Arctic Sea and thickening polar ice show promise but require substantial #funding and #global #cooperation. Beyond #policy and #investment, we need a cultural shift towards valuing #ecological well-being as #integral to #human #wellbeing. "We often hear that in response to the climate crisis, we need to make sacrifices. But this framing is flawed. We must find joy in nurturing what is around us, from nature to the things we own. Fulfilment should come from quality, not quantity, and from nature, not new things." Read the opinion piece here: https://lnkd.in/enC5jXDJ

The Arctic Ocean may be ice-free in less than a decade. The region is warming at least four times faster than the rest of the world. Communities in the North are losing up to 90% of their buildings to fire and flood (sometimes both in a single year). At the same time, other countries are increasing their holdings in the North. Canada’s lack of an Arctic Strategy is an environmental, economic, social, and security issue. What should our government do about it? Today we celebrate #WorldNatureConservationDay by recognizing the importance of the #PacificRemoteIslandMarineNationalMonument (#PRIMNM). An area of 489,989 square miles (1,269,066 square kilometers) in the central #PacificOcean, PRIMNM encompasses the submerged lands and waters around seven islands and atolls and at least 165 known seamounts that are diversity hotspots. It is one of the least impacted tropical marine environments in the world but remains vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including ocean acidification. On March 24, 2023, President Biden directed the Secretary of Commerce to consider initiating the designation process for a proposed national marine sanctuary in the Pacific Remote Islands area. This article from The Economist offers a thought-provoking analysis of the complex issues surrounding Arctic shipping, a practice that is gaining traction due to the changing climate but raises significant concerns about its impact on the environment and the feasibility of safe and efficient operations in the harsh Arctic environment . It also highlights the ethical implications of pursuing economic gains at the potential cost of ecological damage, and encourages a more nuanced and responsible approach to development in this fragile and ecologically important region. A warm welcome to all of our new followers! 💙 We thought we would recap Global Choices and the Arctic Angels' call for a 10-year Moratorium in the Central Arctic Ocean. Our proposal is to protect the 'Ice Shield' from exploitative human activity, for a period of 10 years to allow the summer sea ice to restore and multi-year ice to rebuild, thereby slowing winter sea ice melt. ❄💡 Imagine a decade dedicated to reevaluating and reshaping our approach to critical issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequalities. Imagine a decade of prioritising the protection of this Ice Shield, and mitigating the worsening effects of global climate change. We believe that this climate emergency is interconnected, and the effects of Arctic ice loss are devastating communities across the world that may never have even seen ice or snow. We have a global responsibility protect this magical but fragile ecosystem. At its core, the 10-year Moratorium is a call to action. If you are looking for the opportunity for collective reflection, innovative solutions, and lasting change, join the Arctic Ice Force and support our mission! https://lnkd.in/eG5w2vX6 #Arctic #Moratorium #climate #globalwarming #GlobalChoices

Innovative Climate Action 🌍 A method used for creating ice-skating rinks is now being tested to combat melting sea ice in the Arctic. With summer Arctic sea ice shrinking by 13% per decade since 1979, this initiative, featured by WSJ in Svalbard, aims to create more ice as a potential solution to climate change. #ClimateChange #Innovation #Sustainability #Arctic #Environment #NewTech https://lnkd.in/dExd5mCW
