We are excited to welcome Kendra Flores, DNP, WHNP-BC to The Oregon Clinic Urogynecology! Kendra Flores has worked in the field of women’s health for nine years and enjoys caring for and educating women about their own health. Kendra found that many women were surprised by the unexpected changes that occur with menopause, specifically with bladder and pelvic floor health. This inspired her to pursue advanced education as a nurse practitioner specializing in women’s health so that she could empower and educate women. Halle Berry has joined a group of bipartisan senators to announce new legislation called the "Advancing Menopause Care and Mid-Life Women's Health Act". This legislation will promote menopause research, training, and education. Berry has been an outspoken advocate emphasizing the need to destigmatize menopause and provide better healthcare for women going through this transition. Menopause affects millions of women as they age yet has historically received limited attention and resources. The key details of this legislation are: It would allocate $275 million over 5 years to boost research, training, and public awareness around menopause and mid-life women's health issues. -$125 million would be for NIH research grants, $50 million for public health promotion, $50 million for a national awareness program, and $50 million to enhance provider training. -17 senators co-sponsoring it, including 13 Democrats, 3 Republicans, and 1 independent. #menopause #womenshealth #politics

I wasn't. If approximately half of the U.S. population will endure this at one point in time, why are medical experts not trained on how this needs to be diagnosed and treated? And what about employers? I could not believe that women were not included in clinical research trials until 1993! This was not in the 1920's or 1950's -- 1993 -- the year I was entering college. Menopause isn’t just a women’s issue. It’s a human issue. And understanding it enough to prepare women who will live it ultimately benefits everyone. Medical research is so heavily dedicated to men, so even though every single woman will have to go through the complex and often-times frustrating process that is #menopause, there is only a small percentage (13%) of doctors who even know how to approach it. Research, awareness, and better education are key. Include women in clinical studies. Increase budgets for women’s health research. Give women the tools and knowledge they need to understand their menopausal years. #MenopauseAwarenessMonth #HalleBerry

Achieving gender equity means addressing the specific needs and experiences that impact women differently, such as menopause. Menopause significantly contributes to the gender equity gap in ways that are often overlooked [The Impact of Menopause on Women's Careers BMJ Open in 2021]. Many women going through menopause face challenges like health issues, reduced productivity, and inadequate workplace support, which can affect their career progression, earning potential, and overall well-being. Without addressing such fundamental aspects of women's health, simply having equal representation won't lead to true equity. We need to ensure that women are supported not just in being present, but also in being able to thrive throughout every stage of life, including during and after menopause. This means investing in education, healthcare, workplace policies, and support systems that recognize and address the unique challenges faced by women.

Attention AND resources! These go together like peanut butter and bacon! Ok, bacon goes with everything, but I hope you get my point. Did you know that in recent years, only 15% of the NIH budget was allocated to women's health, AND only 1% of that was dedicated to reproductive aging? Did you know that Menopause was FINALLY added to the NIH’s Research, Condition, and Disease Categorization (RCDC) System in 2023? No wonder people are confused about women's health and certainly about menopause. It's 2024, and more funding is finally going toward women's health, but this is only the beginning. How can we work together across sectors to ensure that the resources women's health needs are available and responsibly used? #menopause #Mentalhealth #Womenshealth #HealthAdvocate #PatientAdvocate #menshealth #Questionofday

Menopause Awareness Month is an important topic considered a taboo subject in the workplace, and there are many topics like this one that society considers inappropriate to discuss widely, however, issues like these affect all of us at some point. It can affect us both in the workplace and at home, and without education, it makes it difficult to understand certain aspects of our bodies, emotions, mood and physical changes that could affect women over a certain age or sooner. I think both men and women could work together to support each other and create more inclusive spaces. I also believe that women have a big opportunity to be closer and support each other more since they understand these challenges better than a man, however, I am not sure how many conversations like this exist in the workplace, even in private discussions. According to this video, most studies are made on men and only 13% of doctors understand the changes menopause brings for a woman. This is quite concerning. I have to say sharing this message didn't come easy for me to distribute however, I believe both men and women need to support each other in their emotional journey that comes with changes in the look and body. When a man understands a woman better he can be a better father, husband, friend, leader, partner, colleague, etc and when a woman understands a man better she can be a better spouse, friend, wife, leader, mother, colleague etc. Thank you Teresa Isabel Dias BSc Pharm RPh NCMP for your work on raising awareness about menopause in the workplace. Joining one of your sessions during COVID-19 brought some perspective and made me think of how much work we need to do as a society to get better.
