Investing in Women-Centric Research and Development (R&D) To achieve true gender equity in healthcare, we must bridge the gap in funding between men’s and women’s health initiatives. By investing in initiatives like the Repro Grants, which awards up to $100,000 for research projects aimed at deepening our understanding of female reproductive biology, we pave the way for better-informed care and improved outcomes. But it doesn't stop there! Clinical trials must embrace inclusivity from the start, with diverse representation informing trial design and biomarker thresholds. This means considering the unique impact of diseases on women and ensuring adequate representation in research organizations. At NPWH, we recognize that increasing women’s representation in healthcare leadership isn't just about fairness – it's about driving innovation. We’ve seen firsthand how teams with diverse gender representation show higher levels of effectiveness, leading to biomedical inventions that directly benefit women's health. Let's work together to continue advocating for equitable funding, inclusive research practices, and diverse representation in healthcare leadership. Participants of the previous #PEOF virtual session ranked the opportunities presented in the IEF Women's Health Innovation Opportunity Map based on the most potential impact on patient outcomes in the next 12-18 months as follows: 1️⃣Advance sex-and gender-intentional research design and analysis during all stages of research (including preclinical and clinical) to generate endpoints, outcome measures, and evidence relevant for women across the life course. 2️⃣Create a partnership with the objective of strengthening the R&D ecosystem across the full scope of women's health. 3️⃣Increase representation of women, sexual and gender minorities, and other marginalized populations in the review of research grants in women's health R&D. Day 1 Womens Health As we enter Women's History Month, it's important to remember the critical role women's health plays in womens work years. Did you know that more than half of the health gap for women occurs during their working years? Unfortunately, we currently lack the necessary systems, policies, and solutions to address this issue. To complicate matters, medical and clinical studies often fail to include women, resulting in a lack of clinical evidence and a circular diagnosis process. Four years ago, Pinkstripes highlighted the importance of investing in women's wellbeing during their peak working years. And according to McKinsey, investing in women's health is a trillion-dollar opportunity for businesses in healthcare and tech. Investing in women's health is not only the right thing to do, but it's also a smart business decision. If we want to see an acceleration of women, health equity matters. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝗽 identifies 𝟱𝟬 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 for catalyzing innovation to improve women's health. This initiative, developed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The National Institutes of Health, gathered over 250 experts and stakeholders—representing over 50 countries and diverse perspectives across various geographic regions and sectors that work in women’s health. Innovators, influencers, and advocates need to work together to realize these opportunities, including: 1 | Commit to equitable inclusion, participation, and funding of women across the R&D continuum, including embedding sex and gender considerations at all stages. 2 | Invest in the areas of women’s health innovation highlighted in this report that address critical needs for diverse groups of women and have a high return on investment potential, including financial returns and health and social benefits. 3 | Create a partnership to strengthen the R&D ecosystem in all areas of women’s health.
