Pain in neck and shoulders when experiencing stress, worry, anxiety? This can be connected to your breathing - how your body is responding to the stress response. Your scalene muscles are nestled on the sides of your neck between vertebrae and collarbone. The scalenes help guide the head and neck, supporting movement and lifting of ribs. They are integral to movement in particular when taking a deep breath. When our breathing becomes dysfunctional (one cause of this can be stress, worry, etc), your scalene muscles go into overdrive, causing tension. This can contribute to neck and shoulder pain. An overreliance on the scalene muscles can reduce the functioning of your diaphragm and affect overall respiratory efficiency The mobility of the diaphragm is connected to the calming part of your nervous system. Can you begin to become aware in your own body, how your breath changes in response to your thinking patterns, and observe the physical changes that you then experience in your body. It is only when you become aware of your body and its changes that you can implement change that works for you.
