"The 10-25% range is too broad and it leaves TTOs too much discretion to use the upper side of the range as a starting point for the negotiation." 💯 Honestly, there's almost never any real justification for a university to take more than 10% of equity in a spinout. They consistently overestimate their value-add: they're usually just middle-men for money coming from government, and early patents often become irrelevant quickly. That sure as hell isn't worth 25%. The independent review on the UK's university spinout system is out, and while expectations were low, it shows things are at least moving in the right direction. It should've gone further ("a good starting point but it feels a bit meh") and been more on the side of the entrepreneurs, but Rome wasn't built in a day. There's still much work to be done in the UK, and across Europe, to help the European deeptech ecosystem thrive. Props to Ale Maiano for being "one of the more vocal members" on the committee and offering a much needed voice for the UK's scientist entrepreneurs amongst the noise. 👏🏻 I know it mustn't have always been easy, so much respect for hanging in there. "For all of the founders of our portfolio ventures we have secured spinout terms within 0-10% range. We are putting together a free playbook for scientists on how to best manage the negotiation process." This is the range it should be. If you're a scientist thinking about entrepreneurship, reach out to Ale and Devika Thapar at Wilbe | Home for Scientist Leaders. They'll do right by you. They genuinely love helping scientists become entrepreneurs. We need a lot more of that! ❤️ 👩🔬 https://lnkd.in/eTDyVfxb #vc #venturecapital #startups #entrepreneurs #entrepreneurship #tech #technology #innovation #deeptech #science #money #business

When I tell people about my legacy research, they often ask what I mean by legacy. I concluded that the lack of a clear understanding of the construct was holding back legacy research. In my latest article, we offer a broad definition of what legacy means and examine some of the attributes that make different legacies meaningful to different people. I remain fascinated by when people do or do not care about legacy, but I think some of the most interesting research questions revolve around the different types of legacies people can leave. https://lnkd.in/gx8DMKDb

Ever wonder why groundbreaking ideas face resistance? Lavin’s Jason Feifer, editor-in-chief of Entrepreneur Magazine, says that getting your idea accepted isn’t just about presenting an innovation—it's about connecting it to what we already know and love. This “bridge of familiarity” helps others see where new ideas fit into their lives. For example, he explains how the car industry shifted people's love for horses to cars by using terms like “horsepower.” The key is to understand your audience and to make your ideas resonate. https://lnkd.in/g-SMsiyN
